“Must see!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

We totally enjoyed our visit to this great Tampa gem! Lots of history, beautiful architecture. Audio devices were provided so you could learn more about the various areas and collections at your own pace. There are only 10 parking spots for the museum during the week. We visited on Saturday so the faculty area behind the museum was available. We used a Groupon deal for our admission - money well spent!

“beautiful architecture”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

Went with a school group so had an actual tour guide and a couple of period thespians (he reminded me quite of bit of that British Branagh actor!) who put on a fabulous show re: their period clothing. They did not miss a beat and stayed in character throughout question time at the end! Building itself and the details are amazing. yes, just a portion of the first floor hallway and rooms make up the museum itself but really nice to see this slice of Tampa History. If you've been to St. Augustine you see similarities in re: to opulence of railroad magnates and their desire to build these amazing hotels for the rich. We hear very nice things about this site at Christmas. We'll return!

“The history of Tampa and of Henry Plant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2013

This museum gives you a short history of Tampa and explains the impact of Henry Plant on Tampa. It contains original furniture, lamps, paintings and decorative items which Plant brought from Europe. There is a free audio with helpful information. It is a former 500 room hotel and is currently part of Tampa University, which, in itself, is interesting. They also have a free one hour tour of the non-museum portion of the building on Tuesday and Thursday at 1:30. It is also worthwhile. There is free parking available. Look for a man on the street just across from the museum entrance.

“Beacon of a luxurious past”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2013

It would be worth going to this building just to admire the splendid Moorish architectural details provided for what used to be the Tampa Bay hotel. The self-guided tour of the Henry B. Plant Museum is a step back of what could be described as a state of exquisite opulence. The quality and the sheer number of paintings, jewelry pieces, art objects, furniture, etc. is mind boggling and so fulfilling when you admire those beautiful things. There is also a well stocked gift shop on the same floor. It is also worth walking over to the university located in the same building which gives you the chance to admire the well maintained ground and wonder about the life of the people who would have been sitting on the front porch with the beautiful view.

“History and beautiful furniture brought together”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

This museum is located inside of the Tampa Bay Hotel which Henry B. Plant had built in the latter part of the 19th century. It is a huge structure with Moorish and Turkish architecture and is a historical landmark. Today it shares the building with a university so there are students to be seen throughout the place. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The museum has quite a few rooms filled with antique furniture which was actually used in the place when it was a hotel. One room is filled with jewelry and there are photographs throughout. There are paintings and portraits and artifacts from over a century ago. Another room is dedicated to the Spanish American War due to the fact that the hotel hosted some of the nation's military and civilian leaders during that conflict. There are rifles, uniforms, a sword, and various military equipment. The museum has a video that plays continuously and a gift shop.
