After moving my son into his freshman dorm at FSU, we wanted to see a little more of the area. St. Mark's National Wildlife Refuge is a gem! The day we visited, there was a small fee for parking ($5) that you deposit on the honor system at the front gate. At the visitor center, there are some nice exhibits, but we especially liked the back deck. Off the deck we saw several baby alligators sunning themselves as well as a deer that was peacefully eating the grasses. We drove to the end of the refuge to look at the lighthouse and walk along the estuary. We saw lots of lovely birds and butterflies. Another surprise for us was the huge number of fiddler crabs that were scurrying about until they were frightened by our presence and quickly buried themselves. I would have loved spending more time, but we only had about 2 hours to spare. Highly recommend even for a short visit.
