“Great place to bring a boat and save some money.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2013

Prices much lower than the rest of the keys. (Don't expect a fancy hotel and you will be happy) It's location is away from the hustle and bustle. Rooms and hotel is old, but they keep it clean, pool is clean, great view from every room. All you do is sleep in it. My favorite part is the Full Service Marina. To get to the Atlantic Side by boat you have to go under a 8 ft clearance bridge (Keep that in mind when bringing a boat, I'm sure there are other ways to get to the Atlantic side, but may be a longer boat ride. Great fishing, lobstering, snorkeling near Looe key Reef, got there in my pontoon boat first time ever in the area. I only stayed there once last summer, but am going back this summer for some snorkeling, boating and fishing with the family. The Gulf side is shallow in a lot of area's so take it easy in a boat until you learn the area. But all in all, if you are bringing a boat and are looking for a low cost area in the keys to stay, I would recommend Sugarloaf Lodge.

Room Tip: Lower level room if they have one available.

Stayed at Sugarloaf Lodge early May 2013 with family, pulling up to Lodge you are thrown back into the 70's to early 80's, they actually have hard keys to the rooms. Upon entering, you are met with a 60's style themed room, beds were extremely nice and comfortable, view was terrific overlooking the Gulf. A/C system woked actually too well for my taste as I froze the first night and finally got it adjusted to a comfortable temperature for the rest of the stay. 20 minutes to Key West and 15 minutes to Bahia Honda beach.

Overall a different feel, but you get used to it after a few days, no complaints at all, prices much cheaper than Key West. I have been in the Hotel business for over 25 years with a major chain, so I have my qualms when it comes to hotels

PS, Try Mangrove Mamas restaurant about 5 miles north of hotel on Route 1, excellent food for breakfast and dinner, and dont forget to ask for Bailey!!

Excellent location right on the water. Key west is only 17 miles south and Bahia Honda state park is about the same distance north so for us it was a perfect location. Very reasonably priced especially compared to Key West.
The room was very clean, and personally I found the decor charming. Like going on vacation back in time, but in a good way. Each room has a patio or balconey overlooking the water.
Tiki bar was great! Cheap drinks and a really nice bartender.
The marina is located right next door and has kayaks for rent.
I would definitely stay here again.

First of all, the location of the Sugar Loaf Lodge is absolutely lovely. It's right on the water, and there's a dock if you have a boat. But if you plan to actually go inside and use your room, be warned that everything else about it is grimey and poorly-maintained. My visit began with room keys (actual KEYS, not cards) that required jiggling and a hip-shove to open the door. The bedspread was old and the sheets were grey and worn. Towels were threadbare - you get the picture. I stayed for 2 nights; the first night I was having trouble with the lights in the room so I went to call the office and the phone was dead! So I got dressed and walked to the office and it was closed. I wondered who I would call for help if I had a serious problem, but fortunately that never came up. The office was also closed when I checked out in the morning, so if you need a receipt be sure to make arrangements when you check in. Basically, like others have said, the Sugar Loaf Lodge is a low-key and nostalgic nod to the 70s. Just remember that along with nostalgia comes plumbing, flooring, linens and towels that have seen better days. Next time I'll stay elsewhere even if it means paying more.

This place is a great alternative to the high prices in Key West. Close enough to the Key West action without the chaos, noise and throngs of people. The price is right, the accomodations clean and good, everything you need to spend time there without going to KW, staff helpful and friendly. The rolle-away bed needs to be updated. Would book there again if I return.

The lodge is perfect for us, not stuffy, lot's of locals hang out at the Tiki and the room decor is like stepping into a time machine, but in a good way. Beautiful water views right out your door and convenient to everything. Great Bar with great characters and must give the cleaning staff a shout out, my daughter caught a bug somewhere and was very sick for a couple of days and they were very understanding and helpful.

We just went to the Keys for a few days. I planned to stay in Key West but the prices were very high and since we planned to do a lot of sightseeing we thought the money would be wasted. We looked for a place close enough to Key West to drive in to the town and at a reasonable rate. Sugarloaf Lodge fit the bill. It is 17 miles from the town, clean and roomy, had a restaurant, and was very comfortable. It is not elegant but not too much there is. The staff was very friendly and helpful. But the best part was the proximity to town and the price. I would stay there again.

Room Tip: All rooms look out on the bay. Stay further away from the Tiki bar when there is live music!
