“Needs some TLC”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

First of all, the location of the Sugar Loaf Lodge is absolutely lovely. It's right on the water, and there's a dock if you have a boat. But if you plan to actually go inside and use your room, be warned that everything else about it is grimey and poorly-maintained. My visit began with room keys (actual KEYS, not cards) that required jiggling and a hip-shove to open the door. The bedspread was old and the sheets were grey and worn. Towels were threadbare - you get the picture. I stayed for 2 nights; the first night I was having trouble with the lights in the room so I went to call the office and the phone was dead! So I got dressed and walked to the office and it was closed. I wondered who I would call for help if I had a serious problem, but fortunately that never came up. The office was also closed when I checked out in the morning, so if you need a receipt be sure to make arrangements when you check in. Basically, like others have said, the Sugar Loaf Lodge is a low-key and nostalgic nod to the 70s. Just remember that along with nostalgia comes plumbing, flooring, linens and towels that have seen better days. Next time I'll stay elsewhere even if it means paying more.

This place is a great alternative to the high prices in Key West. Close enough to the Key West action without the chaos, noise and throngs of people. The price is right, the accomodations clean and good, everything you need to spend time there without going to KW, staff helpful and friendly. The rolle-away bed needs to be updated. Would book there again if I return.

The lodge is perfect for us, not stuffy, lot's of locals hang out at the Tiki and the room decor is like stepping into a time machine, but in a good way. Beautiful water views right out your door and convenient to everything. Great Bar with great characters and must give the cleaning staff a shout out, my daughter caught a bug somewhere and was very sick for a couple of days and they were very understanding and helpful.

We just went to the Keys for a few days. I planned to stay in Key West but the prices were very high and since we planned to do a lot of sightseeing we thought the money would be wasted. We looked for a place close enough to Key West to drive in to the town and at a reasonable rate. Sugarloaf Lodge fit the bill. It is 17 miles from the town, clean and roomy, had a restaurant, and was very comfortable. It is not elegant but not too much there is. The staff was very friendly and helpful. But the best part was the proximity to town and the price. I would stay there again.

Room Tip: All rooms look out on the bay. Stay further away from the Tiki bar when there is live music!

Sugarloaf Lodge is actually on Sugarloaf Key. It doesn't look fancy on the outside. However, once you step into the lobby, you know it is a nice place. Very cute room with tropical mural on wall, very large Western King bed which was comfy with fridge right on the water. One note: room did not have a blow dryer or iron in it although the front desk may have had them avail? We had the downstairs room by the Tiki Bar and it still was quiet. Nice patio with chairs. We sunned on the slope right outside our room overlooking the water on the lounges provided (many avail) and we saw iguanas and pelicans right by the boat dock. The tiki bar is a local hang out and the drinks are dirt cheap. Music there too! They also have a pool. It is about 20 mi from Key West. We normally stay in Key West, but after staying here, Key West is too busy. We will return!

Room Tip: Downstairs room was nice so we could sunbathe and then walk to our room for drinks

tired of traffic into Key West we took a chance and stopped at Sugarloaf Lodge and got their last room. All the good things you read in their reviews are true but the best part is their setting right on the open water. Rather than being stuck in a hermetically sealed room we were able to open the sliders and sit with a drink watching the birds and enjoying the Gulf breezes. Because this is an older building you won't have tissue thin walls, instead we never heard another guest the entire time. This is a family owned resort with the owners always on site setting the tone of warm hospitality and crackerjack efficiency by the staff, James,Jerisia,Della and Joe just to name a few.
This a totally laid back friendly place with a great Tiki bar,an immaculate swimming pool, lots of books in the office to borrow. They are pet friendly, you can put your kayak in the Water right outside your room and there is also a beach by the bar.,,Sunshine, smiles and great piña coladas kept us postponing our departure day after day! They are not kidding when they say "Just another day in paradise!" Would highly recommend, you'll love Sugarloaf Lodge..

Room Tip: Try to book directly with hotel, you'll have a better chance with last minute bookings.

The Sugarloaf Lodge is one of those places you would probably pass by if you were looking for a place to stay and hadn't planned ahead. That would be your loss. Although it doesn't look like many of the modern chain motels it is a wonderful place to stay. Family owned for forty years, the rooms are neat and clean, the beds are excellent, and the furnishing are comfortable, even though you feel like you have stepped back in time to the seventies. The Tiki bar is a great place to hang out with other guests and locals, in a friendly laid back atmosphere you won't find if you go the 17 miles into Key West. You can throw a line in from their dock or just hang around the pool as you enjoy the beautiful Florida Keys as they were before multi thousand passenger cruise ships overran the place. For those of you looking to fly your own aircraft down, their airport, Sugarloaf Shores, is a half mile walk from the Lodge, but of course they will pick you up upon your arrival. Then you can ride the public bus into Key West and save the $4 per hour parking fees, and the attendant driving hassles. And unless you really just want the hassle of Key West everything you need is right here, including their tenant restaurant Zaza, which has great food at prices that are 30% less than in KW.
