After 6 days at Disneyworld, this was a very welcome and refreshing change. We went in the last week of February, it was very quiet - no lines at all - actually there were hardly any people - most of the customers were seniors - very few kids. Our kids (girls ages 8 and 10) loved it. We were there the whole day - we got there about an hour after opening time, as we wanted to make good use of the rather expensive entry fee. Admissions person was very helpful to figure out the cheapest way to pay for our family of four. We had a coupon from a brochure but it was expired.
Kids loved the boat rides - seeing the monkeys and spying the alligators, turtles, birds and fish. I really loved the explanation of the nature - the commentary on all the tours was excellent. I wish there would have been more botanical information - or even an actual "education session" on the horticulture, like they had on the various animals. Since we are from the Canadian Prairies, I would have liked to learn more about the flora and fauna that is so different from ours.
The piped in music that played everywhere in the park was rather wierd, but with the park predominately peopled by senior citizens (both staff and tourists) it sort of fit. It was like we had stepped back into the 50's - a kinder, gentler, slower place.
Ate lunch at the southern buffet - it was delicious! Again after 6 days of hamburgers and fast food in Orlando, this home cooking was much appreciated, even by the kids - there were lots of items they liked. I would have appreciated a lower charge for the kids - since ours don't eat much at all and generally eating at a buffet is a waste of money for them. Looking back, I would have bought a slice of pizza from a different shop for our youngest instead, and just carried it over to the eating area by the buffet, while the rest of us had the buffet.
Kids got to pet a snake. The interpretors of the animal sessions were very friendly and knowledgable. Again I wonder if this was due to the fact that there were very few tourists, so we got personal attention.
Seeing the springs through the bottom of the boat was amazing. This park had been recommended to us by friend from Georgia, we hadn't really realized what it was about, so the unique features of the springs were a special surprise for us. We have travelled alot, but have never seen this clear spring-fed water. A unique location.
I would definately recommend this park for parents with children who want a change from the "fakeness", crowds, and fast pace of Disney. Might be boring for the rebellious teenager, but my 10-year-old will always remember counting the turtles she spotted through the glass-bottomed boat.
Our last boat ride started about 4:50, and we didn't leave the park until about 5:30, and spent a few more minutes feeding the turtles outside the gate. Our hotel was right beside the park - so off the swimming pool for us at the end of a wonderful rejuvenating day!
