“Florida Family Vacation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2012

We stayed in the cheapest room available. It had a garage view. This was by choice. The value of the hotel is outstanding. The rooms are plain but very clean. The pool area is nice and it has an outstanding beach. There are activities. But, to the best of my knowledge, there is no children's program. That would be nice. Overall. you can't beat this hotel for value. I would go back again.

We stayed here for a week, paid a bit extra for a sea view room, was well worth it sitting on the balcony watching the sun set.
We enjoyed our stay here, rooms were very good and clean, staff were helpful and h free limo service to the shopping parade was appreciated.
The rooms have a decent sized fridge that allowed us to take our own breakfast in the privacy of our own room, that said the buffet breakfast was good value for money at $9 a head.
We would return here again.

Room Tip: Paying a few dollars more for a sea view is worth considering.

Just arrived...from the website I expected a classy resort....we were given a room on the north side( would not recommend). Two double beds...very dated rooms..they appear to be clean..but...not anything like the classy website portrayed... the beach is beautiful...unfortunately we are with a hotel full of teens for a soccer tournament... walls paper thin ...and activity in rooms on each side is very loud...his hotel is about a mile walk to the circle...wonderful diners..and shops...if we return...I would most likely look into a different hotel...

This place was about as perfect as you can get. The rooms are very comfortable. Both pools are large and clean. The service at the beach providing towels and chairs was excellent. The beach in this area was fantastic. You can walk for miles. The hotel rents bicycles and we spent 4 hours riding around the island. The hotel is not one of the largest in the area but is one of the most accomodating. Our only minor complaint is the lady at the outdoor bar. She tends to enjoy her friends at the expense of the customers. She acted like it was an inconvenience to wait on us.

Room Tip: We saved approx. half of the room fee by electing to not have an ocean view, but who sits in their r...

The Helmsley is an older property which is in a terrific location on Lido Beach just a short drive to St.Armands Circle, a beautiful upmarket shopping and restaurant area, which provides all the entertainment you would need for a week long stay.
The hotel is quite dated, but clean and well loved and serviced. One thing to be very careful of though is the extremely hard mattresses. If you have any problems sleeping on a hard mattress, stay away. Probably the three worst nights sleep I have had in a hotel ever.
Gulf View rooms offer spectacular views and sunsets, other rooms face the pool but many face the multi-level car park, so beware if you get a great priced room.
Breakfast was okay, but no real healthy options. Did not try dinner, as St. Armand's is irresistible!
If you are in Sarasota check out the Ringling Museum...a real hidden gem!

Room Tip: Well worth getting a gulf view, it completely changes the experience.

First impressions not good! The room we booked via our travel agent US Airtours looked out onto the car park, THE NORTH TOWER! We managed to move to a Gulf View room on day 3 for an extra $80 per day which was well worth the money. Much bigger room and bathroom plus fabulous view!!!!
Food here is very good, limited menu but good. The staff are very friendly and helpful, there's no fighting for a sun bed on the beach just go and tell the beach attendant where you want your pitch! Beach towels are a non stop supply, umbrella's cost $10 each per day to hire but you can buy your own from Walmart for $7 each and leave them there when you leave. Stayed here two weeks and I would definitely stay here again as the location is perfect!
There's a free limo service all day from the hotel until 10pm to St Armands circle so eating out at night is easy if you don't want the hassle of parking, which is limited, and also you can have a few beers.
A very outdated hotel but very clean, bed linen and towels changed daily, the staff service and location far out weigh the age of the hotel.
I would stay here again, a view I wouldn't have considered on my first night!

Returned two days ago from another relaxing time at the Sandcastle. We have been many times and feel at home here. Yes its a bit outdated and the bathrooms are not the most luxurious but who goes on holiday for the bathrooms? Have stayed in far smarter places but they do not have the laid back comfortable kick your shoes off feel that you get here. If you want to chill this is the place. Walk out of your room straight on to the most beautiful beach then turn left and walk along the shore as far as you can till you get to the mangroves. See the fish jump, watch Dolphins, Pelicans, Herons and Osprey, and with a fantastic view acoss Sarasota Bay this is the perfect way to spend a few hours.
All the staff are very friendly and helpful, the food is very good both in the Restaurant and bar and the place is spotlessly clean.
We will be back.

Room Tip: Choose a courtyard room, upstairs cortyard rooms have nice balconies with some sea views but no elev...
