Along the University Parkway Corridor in northern Sarasota, there is a bevy of chain restaurants, such as Carraba's, Bonefish, Ruby Tuesday, Outback Steakhouse, Sweet Tomatoes, Stonewood, etc. etc. However, tucked back into a strip mall slightly to the east of I-75, you will find the Lucky Pelican. Not much on atmosphere, but always good, fresh, dependable food. Known especially for their seafood, preparation can be inventive or simple, whichever you prefer. I took a friend to lunch there recently to treat her for her birthday--I can't believe how cheap--my bill was under $15!! We both had the 1/2 salad (mixed greens with goat cheese, tomatoes, red onion, artichokes, carrots, croutons, and herb vinegrette) along with some yummy soup--changes daily. Had such a hard time deciding what to eat that day that I returned with another friend a few days later. Had lightly fried and deliciously moist, plump and tender oysters (think they had a corn meal coating--great balance of flavors) and sweet potato fries. Yeah, everyone's doing sweet potato fries now, but here they still taste like sweet potatoes and are done right. Also, tasted the fish tacos (Senor Oscar style) with Baja sauce, pumpkin seeds, lime, cilantro and cabbage for...$8.95. Never have room for dessert, so I can't tell you about that. If you are in this part of town, Lucky Pelican is a must!
