My sister lives in Sarasota and knows me to be a sushi aficionado. So, she was excited to take me to the "in" sushi place in Sarasota. All her friends who were sushi experts said this place was the best in Southwest Florida. I was looking forward to the experience, but as impressed as I was with the presentation, I was somewhat underwhelmed by the food, and surprised at the prices in consideration of the location combined with what we were served. Perhaps the people in Sarasota need to get to New York, California or even the East coast of Florida more, because this sushi was average at best.
Perhaps the nigiri is better than the rolls, as that is all my table tried. But, what was ordered seemed more an attempt at avant garde than just good quality sushi. Let me make one caveat to my average rating. The "dynamite" on top of the dynamite roll is very good and not the typical glob of mayo/tobiko/and fish du jour of the standard sushi restaurant. This was the one break from the norm that worked.
In my opinion, this is a place that appeals more to the 'restaurant of the month club,' that will find a new place in the near future and Vizen will go the way of most hole-in-the-wall sushi joints. Hopefully before then, they will realize that they are overcharging for what they are serving, lower their costs and be what they are...another sushi restaurant in a strip mall.
