“Kids were impressed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013 via mobile

Grandkids (2 & 4) liked it. Able to hold and/or pet a 4' alligator. Flamingos were fun..but a bit intimidating, taller than the kids and swarmed around when hand feeding (the sell the feed). The 4 yr old was overwhelmed..and a bit frightened. The bird show was entertaining and informative. Overall a good way to spend 1-2 hrs with kids. A bit pricey, but for a good cause ( they rescue some animals). A lot of the trails are densely shaded by jungle plants..so not excessively hot even on a 93° day.
However, Disney it ain't. Some things were closed. Cement ponds were full of green water. But I would recommend taking the kids.

“Nostalgic Jungle Gardens”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2013

My husband and I especially enjoyed the bird show and were impressed that 1 of the maccaws was actually on the Ed Sullivan Show 35 years ago! This show was typical of what Busch Gardens used to have as a bird show. Not so impressed with the "gardens". However, the staff were some of the nicest, knowledgeable we have seen. Pleasant way to spend a few hours.

“Old Florida attraction”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2013

This attraction dates to 1940 and was originally just a botanical garden. Birds, reptiles and animals were added gradually and the first bird show was in 1972. Two of the original birds from that show are still performing, and one was on the Ed Sullivan Show! There are also reptile and small animal shows, with opportunities to hold or touch. We missed the latter show, but the animals include a spider monkey, prairie dog and agouti.

The park evokes old Florida, with a vintage tiki-style building through which entry is made. The Web site offers a discount coupon, and an AAA and probably other discounts are available. The $15.00 adult price seemed reasonable for all that the 10 acres has to offer. One could definitely imagine being in a jungle as the paved walkways wind through the coolness and denseness of tropical foliage, with swampy areas and running water both to enhance the experience. The water has the distinctive sulphur odor and sulphur residue. Native Florida plants such as coontie and Confederate jasmine and a variety of palms are showcased. The walkways lead to ponds filled with flamingos and other fowl and fish, that eagerly approach to receive the feed that is provided for a small fee. One area of the park includes dioramas that illustrate the life of Christ.

There is a playground for small children and animal statues are placed around the park for photo opps. The small café is inadequate for all but the smallest group, as there is no room for more than three or four people to stand in line between the counter and the door. Food in general seems a bit pricey, e.g., $2.00 for a very small child's drink, but my $6.25 chicken salad sandwich was well worth the money. Premade on thick multigrain bread, the huge sandwich included tomato, romaine lettuce, onion, pickle and a generous amount of salad. There are several indoor tables and picnic tables outside.

The park was uncrowded on a July weekend. Despite the lack of public funding, it obviously has staying power. Don't expect Disney here, but after all it's the type of attraction for which tourists originally came to Florida. I would definitely include the attraction in any visit to the Sarasota area.

“Beautiful Flamingos!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2013

There are many reasons to stop at Sarasota Jungle Gardens, the best is beautiful flamingos eating out of your hand, they also have parrots, which you can get your picture with, and a great reptile show. This is great for kids and adults. The snack bar is pretty pricey. Requires a little bit of walking.

$50 for a family of four and we only stayed a little over an hour. Not worth the expensive price. And we took family with us as well and felt badly that they had paid so much for this disappointing attraction.
