“Good Breakfast but Great Fried Chicken!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2013

I always get the eggs benedict but husband loves the fried chicken! Family recipe, they make it when you order it!

“Hungry for Breakfast?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2013

Sanibel Cafe should be on the top of your list if you're hungry for a good breakfast. Besides all the "normal" breakfast items, they make a daily quiche which you should definitely not miss. I've tried the crab quiche, which was full of fresh crabmeat. Very tasty. The meat lovers quiche is another favorite of mine. They are also know for their Belgium waffles, and very fluffy pancakes. The staff is very efficient, and friendly. We drive out to Sanibel often just for breakfast. Great food plus great coffee plus great staff equals a good start to your day!

“Beautiful tables and good lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2013

Stopped in when we were between lunch and dinner at most other places. We were pleasantly surprised. Our waitress was very nice and helped describe a couple of things on the menu. The crab cake sandwich was good, though the cake itself was rather engulfed in the giant bun and chuck of lettuce. No mayo or dressing, but still tasty. The cole slaw was yummy too. My tablemates had the Rusty Pelican sandwich and the Shrimp Salad sandwich. The shrimp salad was very good and those who like grilled tomatoes enjoyed the parmesean grilled ones on the side. The food was better than expected and it was great to look at the beautiful tables that housed gorgeous artwork of white shells arranged on blue backgrounds. We would definitely go again!

“Great homemade raspberry jam”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2013

We really liked this place and had breakfast here twice. The seafood omelet was a favorite of my husband and I had the 3 french toasts. To much food, just order 2 of fancy french toasts, you will get full. We bought some of the jam to bring home and it is very good on pancakes.
Our waitresses were very friendly and did a very good job.

“Less Kitsch, More Attention to the Food Would Be Appreciated”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2013

This is a "cute," smallish little restaurant in a mall that I can only imagine has survived this long on the basis of its reputation. It certainly isn't either the food or the service. The items we sampled, in fact, were mediocre at best and, in some cases, just bad. The reviewers who are raving about the food either have never actually eaten decent food or, judging from the average age of our fellow diners, have lost the ability to taste. Our omelette was completely bland and without seasoning, as were the eggs Benedict with crab cakes. (Perhaps that was real crab at one time, but by the time it got to us, it was Gorton's.) They don't have the slightest idea how to make either hash browns or hash (both were undercooked and both were unseasoned). Their coffee is truly dreck, with a disturbing strange aftertaste. The waitresses were irritatingly chirpy and had apparently been encouraged to put on the entirely plastic, pseudo-friendliness of the nurse who's on her way in to give you a high colonic. (In fact, ours greeted us with this exact phrase: "And how are WE this morning?"). To add to the annoyance, the management has the colossal gall to post a sign asking patrons to pay cash so they don't have to turn over the 3% discount rate to the credit card companies. (Reason: "So we can keep our prices low.") First of all, their prices aren't low, so obviously the policy isn't working. Second, trying to coerce people into paying cash is not just rude to customers, it's an invitation to abet the management in not paying taxes. And third, it costs money to run a business? Cry me a freaking river. The island abounds in overpriced tourist traps and in pretty awful food. Still, even in that depressing context, this is a good place to miss.
