“Awful Experience”

Hungry Heron Eatery

Upon entering we were immediately turned off by the dirty basement-esque atmosphere, wall to wall carpet and dropped panel ceiling. Although we tried to stay optimistic and enjoy our family dinner out, things continued to spiral downward. The waitstaff was rude and the dinner practically inedible. The salads came wilted and cold like they had been sitting in refrigeration for some time. I will say the crab dip appetizer was good. My fresh Mahi-Mahi, which the waitress suggested I have sauteed instead of grilled, was incredibly dry and served with some kind of fried mashed potato and a corn on the cob cooked beyond recognition. My husband ordered the filet mignon(medium rare) and crab legs. The filet was overcooked and rubbery...nothing even slightly resembling filet mignon. Crab legs were fine and my kids liked the chicken fingers. Maybe we just ordered the wrong things but I would think at least the fish would be fresh and prepared well. Upon complaining the staff became a whole lot friendlier and they did take the dinners off our bill which was very nice and not my expectation.

My extended family enjoyed a wonderful lunch at the Hungry Heron over the busy Easter week. We planned on a late lunch and were seated quickly. We had 10 in our party ranging from 65 to 4. Everyone found something they liked on the huge menu. The portions were large enough that we didn't need anything but a snack for dinner. Great pre-beach lunch stop. The grouper dishes are fantastic and the #222 Manatee fruit salad with sherbet is great for the kids.

you cant miss this place if you are in the ft. Myer/sanibel area. the service was wonderful and the seafood was as fresh as we have found. the menu is almost overwhelming, so you can always find just the right combination. great specials and all-you-can-eats too. we cant wait to go back!

My family and I were very sceptical of going to the Hungry Heron after reading some of the other reviews. But so many of the locals and businesses including another restaurant, recommended Hungry Heron. So we tried it and enjoyed it very much. I guess that is why they call it a Personal Opinion, because this place did not fall short of anything. The food selection is huge as well as the portion size, the staff was very attentative and friendly, the look of the restaurant is so Sanibel Island and my meal was very good (I had the Crunchy Grouper and my husband had the Grouper Picata). My children enjoyed playing the ring game outside so much we actually had to buy one to take home with us. Sanibel Island is a historic little island and Hungry Heron fits right into it. Thank God it was not another city type restaurant, I could get that at home (Chicago, Ill).

It is what it is, fast service, good family menu, nothing fancy. If your looking for a romantic night out I would go elsewhere, but if your looking for a lot of food at reasonable prices it's a good place to chow down. I guess you would call it old Florida style food. Moslty fired fish, not for a patient with heart trouble.
