When I walked into Ellington’s I was excited. The ambiance and the music were great. The restaurant is set up for formal dining, but they allow a more casual dress. But once we were seated, it all went downhill.

Our waitress rarely came by and we actually had to flag her down a couple of times. At a place as nice as Ellington’s, I expected better service. Our water glasses were filled once and NEVER refilled. I had to catch the attention of our waitress to order another glass of wine. My husband and I had shared an appetizer and a salad, so all of our forks were dirty. Since this wasn’t a buffet, I left my dirty silverware on my appetizer and salad plate. When the main course came, all I had left was a spoon. The waitress sat my plate down and left. Try eating grilled fish with a spoon! Neither my husband nor I could get her back, so he reached over to another table and took a clean fork. He also had to deposit dirty dishes there because they were never picked up. Needless to say, we did not stick around for dessert!

For a formal restaurant, I expected much more. My advice -- eat elsewhere, then go to Ellington’s, sit at the bar and to listen to the great jazz.

Just returned from Sanibel and had a great stay at the Sanibel Inn. The Inn had provided a great extended continental breakfast for its guests at Ellington's restaurant! We walked from our rooms and enjoyed fresh pastry, bagels, cereals, coffee, juice, fruit and waffles along with the customary Ellington's welcome. Bravo! Made Ohio a memory for a while in mid-winter. We'll be back.

We ALWAYS stop for at least one dinner at Ellington's when we are on Sanibel. We've eaten in many fancy restaurants, but you feel like family when you eat at Ellington's. The owners walk the floor talking with everyone they meet. Sharon and Jill rarely even sit, but you'll see them smiling and hugging all night long.

The food is to die for. Every plate is a masterpiece. Amy, the chef, is to be commended. If a big fancy meal isn't on your plan for the evening, try eating at the bar. You wouldn't believe what good food you can grab there! My kids prefer it over the regular menu.

We had dinner on New Year's Eve and even my kids were well behaved in the elegance! What an incredible treat to see the Brubeck Boys! Dave Brubeck may be getting older, but when he's on that stage, he's 20!

If you happen to be on Sanibel and don't stop for dinner at Ellington's, you've really missed an opportunity. And if you are zipping around Ft. Meyers, take the time to cross the causeway. It's worth the toll!

I agree that Ellington's has become the best on the island. The dining alone is worth the visit. The staff is courteous, knowledgable and greet you with a warm smile every time! The music is unlike anything we've ever seen in the area. Very talented musicians who make you feel like you're in a high-end New York jazz club! We'll definitely be back to the Sanibel Inn, as well. The newly refurbished rooms and grounds are beautifully done!
