“Private, quiet, calm, relaxing oceanfront hideaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2014

This was our first visit to Sanibel Island and as lifelong Long Beach Island lovers we were hoping to find what we love about LBI and more. We were not disappointed. We choose Gulf Breeze Cottages’ because we prefer the homey feeling of one’s own private space (inside and outside)to that over a hotel room. We stayed in cottage #10, ocean front, 2 bedrooms, 1 ½ baths. Perfectly clean and comfortable, fully equipped kitchen, just bring the food. We enjoyed taking a cup of coffee out to the deck and enjoying our private, quiet, calm, serene and relaxing oceanfront hideaway. Gulf Breeze Cottages is tucked away, down a private path, yet only a bike ride away from everything. Loved it.

Oh and the best there were no kids when we were there. HOW NICE.Thanks again Blair and Barbara.Be back soon. Take care and god bless you all. Oh thank Sandy as well. Great job.....

Room Tip: all the cottages have a heavy duty air conditioning system for those hot summer flordia days.

Hidden away from the "fancy, high-priced" snooty places. Just what I like! Spent the day on the beach and sat on the porch at night in my bathrobe! What could be better? Didn't have to pretend or act "rich" - just had to be myself. Relaxed and enjoyed myself. Inside could use some sprucing up - bed had something hanging from the box spring - bathroom had some black mold that could use some cleaning. (went and purchased some bleach to clean it myself) Cleaned the floors just to be sure they were nice and clean. (I'm a neat freak) Other than cleanliness, great place to stay. If you plan on extended trip, bring extra beach towels - the ones they give you to use are very small. Purchase your own dish soap and sponge - they leave used ones.

Room Tip: Ask about fridge size! I had full-size - the people next to me had apt. size box!

We stayed in cottage 8 (2 bedrooms) for 3 nights with husband & 2 teenagers! Perfect location! Loved sitting on deck having coffee in the mornings. Close to beach, comfortable beach chairs, firm beds & all the things we could need for a relaxing, peaceful & quiet stay in our very own beach cottage! So glad we picked Gulf Breeze over larger resort or hotels! Already planning another stay!!

Old-time Florida charm abounds: this is not a chain, it's not fancy or upscale, you won't feel like you need expensive resort wear to fit in. If you like sitting on your little front porch in wicker chairs, having morning coffee or your cocktails, saying hello to the other people who pass by on their way to the beach, peace and quiet, and a wonderful beach...you'll love this place. We stayed in #4, a one-room efficiency. Perfectly comfy and cute for two people. My only wish was that there was more room in the bathroom to put your toiletries, but big deal. You make your own bed, and clean-towel exchange is every other day--again, this isn't for everyone. Management was very accommodating. There are cute bikes to rent if you want to explore the area, and they provide beach umbrellas, chaise lounges, beach towels, and even beach toys for kids. No loud music, no obnoxious spring breakers, no overcrowded pool, no over-served tiki bar patrons...in fact no pool at all...but who needs a pool when the Gulf of Mexico is just steps away? You can open your windows for the Gulf air and a ceiling fan did the rest. If this kind of place appeals to you, you'll love it...and you'll want to go back. Very convenient location, but tucked away so it feels almost like a secret paradise.

We were looking for a place on Sanibel, which would not remind corporate facilities, hotel or fancy resort. We found that simplicity and relaxed beach- ambiance at Gulf Greeze Cottages. When booking, I was a bit hesitant about "sugar-candy" decor, but it is not prominent in interior and did not bother us at all when we were there.

I was pleasantly surprised about may small extras they have at the place: clotheslines with pegs, grills, beach-chairs to take to the beach, beach umbrellas and beach towels (upon request). There is coin-operated washer and drier. They also had bikes on premises to rent - hourly or by day. There is a simple, but nice shade pavilion almost on the beach, with grill. While it is for all cottages to share, we were never "competing" for space as there are many other grills on the property.

Our efficiency room was well furnished - there was a table and chairs to eat, two other comfortable chairs to sit and watch TV, one more very nice swivel-chair by the window and two chairs on the porch. Plenty of choice! The bed was large (king size), comfortable and there was abundance of extra pillows and blankets. Bathroom was small, but clean (they change towels every other day, if you wish). Just remember to bring shampoo and conditioner (since it is not a hotel, they don't provide it). Kitchen had everything we needed and was very clean. There was salt, pepper, coffee to start, all cleaning supplies.

I had to admit that I was a bit nervous about cockroaches - I heard that they are "everywhere" in Florida, but I did not see anything like that in the cottage. Phew... what a relief!

We also would like to add that the atmosphere is very relaxed and quiet. Management and caretakers are not "in your face". Upon arrival we found a key for "late arrival" and left early at our convenience. Also, since there is no pool, there was no "children-noise" (nothing against children - we have them too, but if you wish for a more quiet time, it may be a bonus).

Room Tip: Efficiency #5 and #7 has kitchenette tucked into a separate nook - so they are not visible from the...

We went to Sanibel after Christmas to unwind and warm up. The cottages are cute and in a good location, but for what we paid per night, it didn't live up to our expectations. We had one of the two one bedroom cottages and it had a few issues that made us glad we were only there for a few days. The dishes were sparse-but there was only a microwave and fridge- it would have been nice to have two 15 or 16 oz. tumblers and two wineglasses. Additionally, since there is no dishwasher, I recommend washing the dishes before using them as the previous tenants maybe just rinsed them. The bathroom was extremely small and the shower needs some work. Very little water pressure at best, the mixing valve in the faucet needs replacing, and if any of the people in the other units (there were 4 units in the building) flushed the toilet or took a shower at the same time it became a painful experience of being scalded or frozen. We also had one evening where we ran out of hot water for a while, which was inconvenient. Sanibel itself has changed a lot since we last visited. It's crowded and congested. The beaches are more like a city sidewalk than a pristine Gulf beach. All in all, I can't see us going back here. Too expensive and little to offer in return.

Room Tip: Chose carefully-only two of the rooms have any view of the water, and of the larger units, only two...
