“This motel is unfortunately badly over rated.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2009

We paid a high price for "beach front" room and I even called many weeks ahead to reserve a room on second floor - which they confirmed. [There is one unit of beach front rooms - four on first floor and four on the second.] However, when we arrived, they indicated only available room was on first floor. Thus, we ended up with a "beach front" room in which we could see a little of the Gulf, but none of the beach or surf. Instead we looked right at a large sand dune which was over grown with some type of Florida foilage. My guess is that all these units were build in the fifties, perhaps earlier. This means they are much smaller than one would expect for a high cost room. In our bathroom, the door would only open part way (bulging shower rod blocks opening). The bathroom barely has enough room for one person to turn around in and two people would not fit. The bedroom was also small with large nice bed, but one was barely able to get around the bed. The breakfast was about like what one gets at Holiday Inn Express - waffles, rolls, juice and coffee. There was no meat and only hard boiled eggs. The eggs were very small. It would appear that they could not afford the few extra cents per egg to provide large. The island was interesting. We enjoyed biking and warm weather. Also like jazz club/restaurant next door. Mainly for adults with few children and pretty quiet.

We stayed in the Milan room (#4107) which is on the second floor of the building just to the right of reception. The room was beautiful, had a very clean kitchenette, comfortable king size bed, WiFi, reading nook in the room AND on the screened-in balcony overlooking the lovely, heated pool. Awaiting us was a fairly nice bottle of red wine on the little dining table in the kitchenette - very nice touch. The staff were very responsive, coming in minutes when we called about a leaky toilet. Beach access was very easy and the beach is gorgeous! The hotel provides beach chairs and umbrellas on the beach, such a plus. Breakfast was great! Make your own waffles is a great touch but be prepared to wait on line to make your waffle as there is only one waffle maker...but it is worth the wait!! Having bikes freely available to us to explore the quaint, beautiful island on the very well marked bike paths was really cool...but the bikes are a little big for someone of my size (5 foot 3). Don't forget to bring a container for all the lovely shells you'll pick up on the beach!!

We stayed for five nights at the end of a terrific touring holiday of florida but cant understand what all the fuss is about ,both the resort and the island are average and there are much nicer beaches on the gulf coast than the ones on sanibel.
Firstly the reception we got when booking in was very curt ,we had received more welcome at some of the travelodges we stayed in,it was basically sign here if this is the agreed rate for your room -here is your key now good luck because i want to return to reading my book .
The room we had on the 2nd floor had lovely views of the ocean & overlooked the very well kept grounds and pool area. The room itself was quite spacious with basic but clean furniture & a nice kitchenette area for self catering. The bathroom is very compact & was well stocked with quality RUSK products which was nice.
The room was clean & basic but i would describe it as being very similar to many motel rooms .Obviously sanibel has a reputation for being a more exclusive resort so this really does allow them to charge excessive prices for basic accomodation & i do take exception to the description of the breakfast as being complimentary ? as the price of this has already being factored into the room rate & you do serve yourself .
The 1 minute walk from room to beach was the best part of staying here & they supplied loungers & sun shades which i thought would be standard at all resorts .
Sanibel itself was much different to what i was expecting ,i had thought that periwinkle drive would be a more traditional small town main street and was surprised to find a scattering of very modern and sometimes tacky shopping areas. There is no centeral area or boardwalks where you can stroll in the evenings so basically you just drive to a restaurant & after dinner drive back to your accomodation.I would feel that the island is more suited to self catering holidays for groups or families.
One warning is the no-seeums ,the first sign of any bite start putting on the insect repellant.Luckily i didnt recieve any but my wife had at least eighty nasty little bites & they are not pleasent.couldnt figure out wheather they bite on the beach or around the shrubbery at breakfast in the mornings ?

Enjoyed 5 nights at Song of the Sea. We appreciated the peacefulness and privacy of the property. You don't even realize there are larger complexes right next door. The employees were all helpful and friendly. We had a beachfront suite that had a living area besides the bedroom. Liked having the separate space. Yes, the bedroom is tight but basically just sleep in there. I'd rather have the living room space. Having a screened in porch to sit on was also a plus. We were not bothered by any of the bugs (noseeums). May be because the weather was beautiful. Low humidity. Having bikes to use made for a nice way to explore the island. We weren't ambitious enough to bike all the way to Ding Wildlife Refuge though. We drove. It's nice seeing preserved space and the wildlife. We saw a LOT of alligators on the golf courses. Had a good dinner at Timbers. The Gulf was too warm and calm for me. I'm used to the Jersey shore. But, it was nice to sit on the beach or walk and look for shells. The pool was quiet, no kids! Water was also quite warm in the pool. Would definitely recommend Song of the Sea for a quiet, relaxing vacation.

After researching several hotels/resorts on Sanibel, we decided on the Song of the Sea. Perfect choice. We asked for, and received a very private second floor beachfront suite. The room was perfect for our needs; clean, updated, balcony with great beach view, very cozy king bed. Yes, the bedroom suffers from poor planning, as a result there is about six to eight inches between the end of the king bed and the wall. We spent more time on the bed than walking around it, not a big deal for us. If you have leg issues, back issues, or overweight this could be a deal breaker. Breakfast was fine. Nothing fancy, but we were not concerned, it's breakfast. The best part is the NY times. The beach was excellent. Easy access, no difficulty, always had a chair and umbrella. This place is very quiet and relaxed. Many times we were the only people in the pool or the hot tub. No kids in sight, just couples reading on the beach. The only bummer on Sanibel is that the food leaves a lot to be desired. Therefore, large portions are everywhere without a ton of flavor. Frankly, over the top with size. Dolce Vita was very good. The Bubble Room is okay. Holy Cow was okay. Nothing that made you say "wow". But, I would go back in a heartbeat as the Island is beautiful and they clearly understand that keeping out big resorts and high rise hotels is the key to keeping this gem intact.

  • Liked — Location to beach.
  • Disliked — Space between end of bed and the wall...really, that's it.

We just returned from our week long stay at Song of the Sea and it was wonderful. The property was very well maintained and rooms were as described. It started to get a little chilly so we requested a blanket and softer pillow, both arrived very promptly.
Its nice having free breakfast as well as free bike rental, beach chairs and umbrellas.
The property never felt crowded and was very peaceful. A great place for a 10 year anniversary.

  • Liked — Right on the beach and very private feeling
  • Disliked — Pillows are a little hard but you can request softer ones.

We just returned from our honeymoon trip to Sanibel and our stay at the Song of the Sea.
It was a wonderful, peaceful place with very friendly staff and beautifully kept grounds.
It has the perfect location right on the beach and having the beach chairs and umbrellas out each day was really nice.
The continental breakfast was good and the waffle maker is a nice touch.
We had a room facing the beach and it was so quiet, all we could hear was the sound of the ocean. It is true that there are mostly adults staying there, we saw couples of all ages and no children at all.
The staff was very prompt to assist when needed and was able to accomodate any of the special reqests that we had.
The rooms included everything that we needed and we were able to really relax and enjoy ourselves without a worry.
We are already planning our return trip for our 1st anniversary.
We truly loved our stay at the Song of the Sea.
