“The resort does not care that this was the worst experience ever”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2009

Room not ready until after 6pm. View was overlooking driveway on first floor, no balcony or patio at all. Trams were overfull and were rudely told on 3 occassions that we could WALK. (One of us in our party was physically unable to walk). We called the front desk several times for information but the phones kept rolling and never answered. WE REPORTED PROBLEMS AND RESORT DID NOT CARE TO RESPOND.

Greetings, I have found better places to stay close to Destin. The resort is understaffed, over priced, and surcharged. The spa on the the bayside was pitful. At least Serniity by Sea was professional. Just my opinion....

My family and I stayed only on the resort for 1 night and we will NEVER return to this resort. We had booked a night at the Luau and called ahead to confirm our reservation and ask for an early arrival time. When we arrived at the front desk after 12pm we were told that housekeeping was cleaning our room and they would call us when it was ready. We were able to use the pool while we were waiting for our accommodations.

At 3:30 we called the resort to ask if our room was ready yet and we were told "not yet." At 4:15 we called to ask again if our room was ready and told again, "not yet." My husband then drove to the front desk and was greeted by a very young "manager" who stated that housekeeping had not released the room and it would not be ready for "a while." Check-in is at 4pm. When he told the manager that we had 2 young children who were hungry and tired he offered another room on a lower floor facing the pool, the pool which is very close to the rooms and very loud.

I found it ironic that in the information that you are given at the front desk during check-in says "please honor our 11am check-out time," when they could not honor their check in time.

went with 3 families, kids age 7-19. Resort is huge, much too big and overdeveloped for my tastes. Our 3 bedroom on the beach side was double booked we found out at checkin so we were moved to the bay side. Actually, it ended up we preferred it over there as the landscaping was nicer and no matter where you stay most places you aren't really on the beach per se like other ares of FL I have stayed in. They have a shuttle bus but you can expect to wait a while during peak times. The longest we waited was about 30 minutes but off peak they were there within less than 5 minutes after calling. Our condo was a great , clean and well stocked 3 br, 3 1/2 bath. Beach umbrellas ran 35$/day which I thought was steep. Sand was awesome and resort grounds clean , safe, well manicured. Publix grocery close.

My family and I have been coming to this resort for 3 or 4 years , usually the same Memorial Day Weekend. We have had good and bad but this trip was over the top. We made our reservations in January for some great golf package. The resort staff had called us about the terrific promotion. Wrong. We calculated the " golf package" vs. the resident golf tee time charge and we saved a whopping $6.00 total for the week. Yes indeed 6 whole dollars. 5 months advance notice, with a deposit. 6 bucks.. It took 2 hours to check in. The promotion staff upon taking our money and reservation, entered the wrong information. After we provided our confirmation e-mail letter, we were given comp room{s}. The 3 bedroom condo we requested was not available. We were told by Josh, the GM, that we would be comped for our inconvenience by not charging us for that evenings stay.. We ended up paying the full amount when checking out. Josh was conveniently unavailable during check-out and could not assist in the compensation. Josh did call back -24 hours after checking out. Our comp was now less than 1/2 of the price he had originally quoted because of Florida taxes??? So in reality, we rented a 3 bedroom condo for 249.00 per night plus 300% in florida taxes. But our condo really had been the clincher. Our room was literally pieced together from a thrift store. Very tacky. Very 70's. Very worn, stained carpets, uncomfortable couches, disgustly stained bed spread and throw pillows. The list goes on and on. Very embarrassing to have our family over. I just could not stop apologizing. Even the security pool guy was a power crazed coo coo. He hovered over us expecting that we do something wrong. He made us feel like kindergarden kids in the pool for the first time. Very disappointed. It should not be called a resort.

We stayed at the Luau on New Years Eve. The line for check in at the Grand (where everyone has to check in) was out the door at 3pm. Of course we understood it was New Years.

Our 2 bedroom condo was on the 4th floor. The condo was really a 1 bedroom suite, and a 1 room similar to a hotel room with a common entry door then 2 locked entry doors to each room.

The 1 bedroom had a king bed and a pull out couch (sleeping 4 comfortably), a dining area, kitchen and washer dryer. Other 1 bedroom had a king bed and a small chair pullout. So it fit 3 people comfortably. We also came away with little bug bites from our bed but no one else complained of that.

BUT...when we tried to take a shower the most horrible smell of rotten eggs filled the whole place. It was the worst smell I have ever experienced and it permeated everything every time you ran the water. We had to open the windows and doors. It took more than an hour to clear out.

We called the desk and they explained that a lot of the condos have this problem as they sit empty for a while. We tried to let the water run and flush it out. But it did not get any better.

My son, a construction worker said they needed new water heaters and in today's economy the owners don't want to put anymore money into the condo's. Which I have to think he maybe right. While we were standing in line I heard many a lament about wishing they could unload their condos.

The grounds are very nice. Only one hot tub worked, the heated pool was ice cold, I think it's heated by a small stream which winds around the property and that too was cold. It was in worn condition but near the beach and it had a nice workout room.

We could enjoy the fireworks from our balcony. The kids liked it so we were happy if they were.

We booked on book-it for $200 a night. The front desk said they'd refund 10% for the no water. We haven't received anything yet.

So what do I recommend? I'll look somewhere else next time and ask about the availability of hot water sans the sulfur smell.

I think I'll stick with the VRBO for renting condo's. They'll have a cliental and hopefully make more of an effort.

We have just returned from a trip to Sandestin, Florida. We really enjoyed the trip. There were five adults in our party. We booked our stay through Gibson Beach Rentals. We stayed at the Beachside I number 4040. It was really nice. We got there early and the housekeeping crew let us put our stuff in the room while they finished cleaning. They were very nice. They told us some things to see in the area. Gibson Beach Rentals has the amenity cards available through them in case you want to rent bikes to ride, play basketball, putt-putt, rent beach chairs, etc. Even though the amenity cards were there for us we didn't end up using them. We would have used them to probably ride the bikes, but we usually walked instead. We just really spent our time at the beach since the weather was so beautiful. We also went over to the Baytown Wharf and ate and spent time listening to music they had on Wed. evening. The facilities there on the site are really nice. The golfing was great as well. We unfortunately couldn't take our golf clubs with us so we rented them. They had a discount after 2 p.m. for golfing and then it would have cost us $40 a person to rent clubs but we went to the golf stores in Destin and they had coupons for free golf club rentals so that worked out great. Also, we were able to save money on our beach chairs, etc., because our condo had chairs and boogie boards and toys in the closet so we didn't have to spend the money on renting the chairs and umbrella from the beach guys.
I would suggest this resort to anyone who loves the white soft sandy beaches. They are wonderful. Going this time of year was great because there was really nobody staying at our condo building. It was like having the beach all to ourselves. On the day we left, we went to the Naval Aviation Base in Pensacola, Florida. It has a wonderful museum. I'm not really into museums normally, but this was a great one. They have all kinds of huge planes and helicopters and simulators to ride in. The museum is free. They also have a lighthouse you can climb up in and a fort that you can tour. Neat base!

  • Liked — It's location on the beach
  • Disliked — Not close to an airport
