We stayed at the Luau Tower 2 this past week. This was not my first visit at Luau or Sandestin Resort, but my most recent stay. I always enjoy staying in the Sandestin resort because it is like its own little town and lots of families choose to stay there. It makes the resort very family-friendly, but it is also a nice place for couples and young people to visit. This particular trip, however, I noticed a few things that were disappointing. I heard from my brother that Sandestin is under new ownership, but am not entirely sure of this, but I did notice several changes from my last stay in 2009. For one, the tram does not run through the resort as often as it did and the routes seem longer, plus our wait for the tram was at least 15 minutes. In the past, guests could count on the tram running through often and moving on a more efficient route through the resort. Also, the tram I took was pulled by a Jeep and was open. I also saw the tram from my previous visits which is more like a closed-in van. The open tram was nice with the ocean breeeze, but the route was so long that we made it to the Village of Baytowne Wharf way after our family who left after us and drove their cars.
In the Village a few businesses have closed down that were there previously leaving a few buildings vacant, which are probably signs of the poor economy. However, with places like Fat Tuesday's and Rum Runners, the Village is very lively and full of people: families and couples alike. There are so many activities for children like the ropes course, zip line, Euro bungy and even a new buisness that offers games and a laser course. My family enjoyed that one a lot. The fireworks every Tuesday night are a highlight and the fireworks on July 4th were absolutely awesome.
As for our unit at Luau Tower 2, I was a little disappointed. The carpet is a bit worn and the furniture and when we arrived, there was no toliet paper and only a few towels. A call down to the service desk fixed the toliet paper issue, but when we asked the cleaning ladies for more towels they asked for dirty ones in return for clean ones. We would have liked to keep them all and wash them using the stacked washer/dryer in our room, but handed over the dirty ones. The view from our balcony, on the other hand, was awesome. Our balcony wrapped around two sides of the building so we had a beautiful view of the ocean. Luau Towers 1 and 2 are just across the street from the beach making the beach very accessible. Our unit was a 1 bedroom with a living room with TV and dvd player, dining area with six chairs and a galley kithen with coffee pot. The living room couch folds out to a bed and the bedroom had a king sized bed with TV. The unit could easily sleep 4-5 people. The bathroom was very nice and modern, but our sink drained very slowly, which was something we should have called down to have fixed, but we were so busy each day we never did. In short, I love this place and though I did find a few things disappointing, I would not hesitate to go back. The location, private beach, and the Village alone make Sandestin and the Luau such an awesome place to stay.
