My job requires that I stay in hotels for months at a time. When it comes to a weekend getaway when not working, it'd better be a unique and special place to lure me from my Florida home.
The special and unique place is the Vinoy in St. Petersburg, Florida. Opened in 1925 and reopened after a major renovation in 1992, this Marriott property is every bit Palm Beach's Breakers minus the old-money attitude.
From the $5 roundtrip rides to Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays, to the beautiful pool, you just can't do better than the Vinoy.
Along with reasonably-priced food in the seven cafes and restaurants (including Alfresco's poolside), this hotel's history is generously displayed on walls and in nooks and crannies. throughout the pink landmark. You get a real feel for the age of flappers, ragtime and zoot suits. You can spend quality hours reading the history on nearly every wall of the public areas. And take it home with you in one of the soft cover Vinoy history books.
What is most appealing at the Vinoy is the lack of suffocating rules. The pool on a sunny day is a lively city of children, grandparents, newlyweds and others all having fun. Beach balls fly with other light water toys. Yes, you can enjoy your plastic up of wine, beer or a drink while in the pool. You can let the pool's waterfall massage your shoulders. You can let the amazing hotel hostess, Wanda, cheerfully serve you.
There aren't any hotel employees ready to review pool rules for you. It's amazing how hotel guests all using common sense can have fun without any constant reminders!
Unfailingly friendly, the staff at the Vinoy is sunny without being patronizing. As one hostess told us employees are well taken care of by management. She said it was a pleasure to work at the Vinoy. It shows.
Well, there was one rule on our recent weekend stay. We shared the hotel with the visiting Chicago White Sox and in the lobby was a sign asking that players not be asked for autographs.
A rule we could all live with.
Enjoy the Vinoy!
Riviera Beach, Florida
At checkin, a simple request to overlook the marina was granted. Fourth floor. It was very quiet.
