“Once again, we were not disappointed.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2011

After staying at this KOA back in March, we just returned from another weekend, and again, it was great. Lori and her staff are terrific. Everyone was very helpful, and it seems they've made lot's of improvements to the park. This time we took our bikes so we could explore a bit. The Pinellas Trail runs right in front of the property, so access was a breeze for biking. We met another couple there and the access to the fishing was a hit with their kids. Since it's only a couple hours from home, this is quickly becoming one of our favorite spots for a getaway weekend, or a place to stay while visiting friends in the Tampa / St Pete area.

For £60 a night, I had quite big expectations. We booked a lodge which turned out to be more reminiscent of a shed with a bed (no sheets or pillows) and a plug socket. We booked through Keycamp whose website is quite misleading with its photos of the lodges. We went straight back to the reception checked out and booked into a hotel on Madeira beach.

Staff were very helpful though, and from other users reviews, it appears we weren't the only people to have expected a lot more for the price.

We really enjoyed our stay here - the staff is friendly and helpful, the campground is well maintained, the air conditioned restrooms are clean and the pool area and kids activities are great. We had a nice paved waterfront site with access to the water. Less than 10 minutes from the campground are beautiful gulf beaches, great shopping and lots of restaurants. Two things we feel are missing are cable TV and WiFi. We would definitely recommend staying at this campground.

We vacation every winter at the St.Petersburg Koa and I would not think of looking anywhere else.
The staff are great.
The park has everything that we need.
The people that we camp with are the best.

We have been here since May. We have moved down here from up north, so we are looking for a house. The campground is great. It has everything you need and more. The staff is great too, as most live on the property and are always available. Marshall is best; he's here with his wife. Prices aren't bad, if they were the price all year long. It seems we are going to have to find a new campground come October, because they jack up the rate so high for the "snowbirds." I feel if you've been here way before October, you shouldn't have to pay any more to stay longer!!! This is the only great downfall of this campground. So come anytime between April and October and you'll love it. After that, this campground is for suckers that will pay for it!!

Room Tip: If you want a cabin, get the big ones called lodges!!! Otherwise, they're very tiny...

I really liked the lodge. It was very clean when we got there and there was no problems with the neighbors. I enjoyed the pool, bikes, and the place. And its really close to the beach and shops.I had a good time fishing plus the service is very neat and organized. But there wasent ANYTHING to do in the game room. I would suggest you to bring a plan and a map so you know where you will go on your trip so that you can enjoy it more.

Room Tip: Ask them to give you a lodge, they are the best!

St. Pete was our second stop for tenting across the U.S. and as we had to make reservations last minute, and knew nothing about St. Pete, we went with this KOA. By morning we definitely regretted the decision.

To be clear, there were no problems with management or anything of the like. We arrived supremely late, and the guard was very helpful with our late night check-in. He even let us change our reservation site. When we checked out in the morning, the clerk was very kind and helpful. Unfortunately, the site has it's own problems.

When we arrived, the KOA is in a slightly unsavory area in the back. It is not well lit, especially the area around our tent site. We originally booked the site because we saw it was 'waterfront'. What we didn't understand (our mistake for only reading a few reviews) is the water is a bayou. Which means a horrible amount of humidty, animals and worst of all, mosquitoes. So as we are trying to set up our tent and hook up our electrics, the area is completely unlit and filled with insects. Not a pleasant experience, especially with a few late nighters wandering around. It just felt very unsafe, as again, this is the bayou area and Florida is known for alligators.

We talked to the guard and he let us move to a well lit area in the front. We thought this would be better, but soon realized the front sites are a chain link fence away from the trail. The trail is frequented by many people throughout the night some of whom are homeless and not of sound mind.

Although some of it was just being weary from the drive, and attempting to set up a tent and electrics in the dark, the site just overall felt unsafe. Couple that with the insects and run-down bathrooms and the place is just no longer satisfying.

But most of all, the Fort De Soto campground is so close by, that I feel like this KOA will be hard pressed to get any campers when they have a cheaper and far more visually stunning alternative just south of the site.

Room Tip: Stay away from sites on the water if you plan on being outside.
