I had to share this terrible experience with everyone. When we first arrived, our air conditioning unit was making very loud noises. Maintenance had to come and do repairs. I sat on the bed enjoying the pillows when I discovered a decorative pillow had a hole that was held together with a safety pin and our sleeping pillow had brown stains on it. The shower was clearly unwashed with brown splatters on the shower walls that were still wet. In disbelief, I took as many pictures as possible.

My mother and I stayed here for one night during the Sunshine Blues Festival in January 2015. Checking-in was a bit confusing as the designated parking garage was not "across the street" as I was told over the phone, but two blocks away. We could not check-in early, which was fine, since the front desk is manned 24 hours a day. The hotel is beautifully decorated in classic a Spanish-style outside with a modern flare in the rooms. We booked a suite with two rooms separated by a partial wall with one swiveling TV. The kitchen was equipped with a refrigerator, a stove, sink, coffee-maker, and dishes. The bathroom was set-up in a typical European-style with a shower. Unfortunately, this style also means the shower is only separated from the rest of the bathroom by a curtain - nothing to keep the water from flowing into the toilet and sink area. There is, however, a 'lip' separated the entire bathroom from the rest of the suite, which makes using the bathroom in the middle of the night a bit precarious. The bathroom light switch also is located outside the bathroom, which means potentially disturbing roommates during nighttime bathroom visits. The air-conditioning read 64 degrees, but it was easily 80 during the night of my stay. My biggest complaint, however, is the Murphy bed - the room was advertised as "2 Queen Beds;" however, the second bed is an extremely hard Murphy bed with ultra-thin pillows. Had this bed advertised, I might have prepared myself; however, after the concert, I was tired and in need of a good night's sleep - that didn't happen. The best feature of the room was the over-sized, claw-foot bathtub off the main bedroom, in addition to the hotel's location on Central, close to the Bay, and, not to mention its proximity to Ceviche, the fabulous Spanish restaurant downstairs. Overall, I would recommend the hotel to single travelers or those happy to sleep in the same bed as their rooming companions.

A renovated 1922 hotel located on Beach Drive, downtown. The rooms are clean, comfortable and tiny. Some face the waterfront. Price per night with a discount, plus tax was $134!

The staff is not literate in English.I asked three times for a specific room and was assured that room was available. It was not.

The associated restaurant, Cerviche Tapas Bar, was closed in 2014 for health violations. The Pincho Y Pincho cafe is closed for "renovations".

Room Tip: Good luck in communicating with the staff!

The Ponce De Leon is a great choice for a budget hotel in Saint Petersburg, Florida. The location is perfect on the corner of the most desired streets of Beach and Central. All the shops, museums, restaurants are at your doorstep with the added bonus of being directly across from a park, and the waterfront.

The hotel is clean, and it has wood floors which I prefer to carpeting. The style of the hotel is a bit lacking, and reminds me of my stays in poorer countries. Nothing really matches. The walls of the hallways are red, and green with brown carpeting. That said, the hotel is clean, and has more than any traveler could require. I was especially happy to see laundry facilities available for guests use. My room was large, and equipped with a microwave, and a small refrigerator.

If you want to access the charm of downtown Saint Petersburg on a budget, this is the place to stay.

The Ponce is an excellent hotel with professional staff who cater to your every need. The only downside is the unusually high price tag. Staying in the hotel at half price during a season-low period was still fairly expensive. I would still recommend this to anyone looking for a different type of hotel experience.

We just stayed here for a weekend to see the downtown and Dali museum and it was perfect! When we asked for a room with a view when we checked in we got the BEST one -- top floor, big windows looking out on the harbor. Super comfortable bed, good shower, old-timey style, classy little hotel with a GREAT Tapas restaurant right on the first floor that we loved.

Room Tip: Higher floors, rooms at the end, look out over the harbor or the city.
