If you're looking for a place where you can sleep at the end of your day in downtown St. Pete, look elsewhere.
The window A/C units are very loud, and the one in our room was exceedingly loud. We're not light sleepers, but it would simply be impossible to sleep with the A/C on.
I assumed management was unaware of the problem, so soon after we arrived, I politely mentioned it to Jane, the Marketing and Guest Relations Manager. She seemed surprised when I told her. Importantly, my husband and I visited the hotel in November, and the weather was cool, especially at night. As such, we left the A/C on during the day to cool the room off, and we were able to turn it off at night. I'm not sure how a spring or summer guest could make do.
In any event, when we checked out a couple of days later, I mentioned the loud A/C to Kan, the Operations Manager. He was surprisingly rude to me. First, he informed me that the A/C was loud because I had it on the wrong mode. Notably, however, I didn't change the mode after we arrived. Second, he simply handed me my credit card voucher to sign and took it when I was done -- not even a "thank you for staying with us."
Hotel guests should generally be able to expect that they can rest at night. And to the extent noises or other distractions make that difficult, the noises should not be the result of the hotel's lackadaisical attitude toward its facilities. Also, it's disappointing that The Pier Hotel would go to all the trouble of restoring an old hotel, yet knowingly overlook such a significant problem.
