I was a frequent guest before it was sold to a group of investors (2-3 times a year). I stayed there for a couple nights about a month after the new owners took over... it felt uncomfortable, so I stayed away for a year. I came back recently... OMG! What a dissapointment!! Where do I start?
The Verandah - they got rid of the two rectangular glass top tables and replaced them with six smaller round glass top tables. That is about the only plus I found. Their mistakes... They got rid of all the plants, the water fall feature, and everything is white color. BLAND & BORING !!! No charm whatsoever! Previous owners had painted the sidewalk to match the hotel color schemes... well, they are now in disrepair and looks run down and awful.
The Lobby - Furniture is still the same, which I like, but they changed the color scheme of walls and got rid of the cloth curtains. While they picked a nice, professional color, it is also BLAND & BORING!!! Again, they got rid of the charm. The girl at front desk was dressed in plain clothes, nice disposition, but she lacks hospitality professionalism. The boys who took over when she left, were also nice guys, but dressed in plain clothes and also lacking of hospitality professionalism. Some other 2 guys showed up to use the computers, they were just wearing t-shirts and jeans. What a joke!
The dinning room - Again, they changed the color scheme... BLAND & BORING !!! Coffee is not always hot... mind you they keep them in a thermus... so it's hot for a long time... they just seem to forget to check once or twice in their shifts. Breakfast is ok, though bagels have shrunk 50% in size and they got rid of a few things. Manager's cocktail is down to 1 hour and 1 drink. If you are going to sell second and third drinks, at least be there for 2 to 3 hours and keep refilling pop-corn and pretzels !! The 5 course dinner is $59/person or $31 for single... no thank you! The chef is a nice guy and cooks very well, but with that ambiance... forget it!
The rooms - Once again, they changed the color scheme... BLAND & BORING !!! Need new bed matresses for sure !! The small room size doesn't bother me... it's an old building... I actually find it to be part of its charm. Restrooms are small, but again, that doesn't bother me. If you want quiteness, ask for a room that does not face the street & you'll be fine.
In balance... I miss the old hotel and Jane's smile and profersionalism, as much as I miss a deceased loved one. I don't like the new bland and boring place it has become.
Suggestion: Get uniforms for the people who work there! Bring back the beautiful green/orange/white/gold color schemes! Get some vibrant colors in the verandah! Add plants! Make it inviting and re-establish the charm... this hotel is not meant to be a "business stop/go" type hotel... it's meant to be nostalgic, old world like, victorian feeling. I do not think I'm staying there again.
