“Nice hotel, but overrated and overpriced.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2009

Frankly, I wasn't impressed. It's a nice hotel, but doesn't deserve it's reputation as a first-class hotel. It's upscale, but pretty much in the same class as a Hyatt or a Crowne Plaza.

Meeting facilites are good, the room was adequate and nicely done, but on the small side.

Wasn't impressed with the resataurants either - staff on the stuffy side, food was so-so. You'll starve if you don't like seafood - extremely few non-seafood items on the menu.

Overall it was nice, but not worth the money.

Spent the July 4th, 2009 weekend at the Don Cesar with wife and children. We were thoroughly disappointed. I won't say it was a horrible experience. It simply is not worth the money. There were not enough towels in the pool area. Our room was not even ready at 4:00pm ( which is check-in time). Our television was not working, and we had to call maintenance twice to fix the TV. The fire alarm rang in our room at 2AM, and when I called the front desk, someone very incompetent answered after 20 rings. Also there were never enough beach chairs. Simply put, this is not a good value. In fairness to Don Cesar, we did tour a condominium rental that they own about a half mile north on the beach, and that looked like a much better value

This was an absolutely wonderful trip. The staff were extra friendly as if it were a "Disney Experience" but they didn't overdue it. The facilities were excellent and well maintained. I didn't know they could make sand that SOFT!! ( which I might add isn't that soft anywhere else on the beach) The bar staff by the pool were extremely friendly and the other hotel guest were very respectful. Not a bunch of rift raft.
I previously stayed at the BEACHCOMBER just down the road and the experience was horrible ie. urine in bed, hotel guest were idiots, beer beer beer, like it was spring break- but it wasn't.
Anyway, if you are considering this hotel, don't hesitate, it is fantastic.
Only con would by that the Jr Suite with a seperate Bedroom didn't have a door to the bedroom??? A little weird but we dealt with it.

If it weren't for the beautiful beach, we would say that this trip was an absolute nightmare. This is by far the worst vacation we've had, and it's all because of the terrible service at the hotel. The restaurant staff was great, the shop girls were great, but the front desk, concierge, bellmen, everyone else...they were rude, dismissive, and have no idea what customer service means. I called the manager to complain, and the front desk manager was the only person I could get a hold of. It turns out that she herself was inappropriate upon our arrival, and I understand a little of the top down customer service.

Also, don't think that you get those pretty seats by the ocean without paying. $25 for hotel guests to rent 2 chairs in front (they call these "cabanas"). The pool and beach are filled with people not staying at the hotel. If non-guests want a chair, they have to pay $50. As you can imagine, the beach is packed and the pool resembles a low-rent, middle-aged MTV pool party with more children than one would find at Disneyland actually in the pool.

It's actually very sad because the hotel is absolutely stunning. The staff really needs to be overhauled. I would never come back to this hotel or recommend it to anyone under current management.

By the way, the rooms are EXTREMELY small. Complete rip off.

In hopes of celebrating our 2nd Wedding Anniversary, we booked one night at the Don Cesar for Saturday, August 8, 2009. Knowing we would be arriving early, we requested an early check in. We arrived at 2 p.m. and were told that they were cleaning our room and that they would call us as soon as it was ready.
No one called, so after having a nice lunch in downtown St. Pete, my husband pulled me away from antique shopping to head back to the hotel. We arrived back at 4:15 p.m. only to be told that our room was not ready yet. 4 p.m. is the hotel's check in time, so we were surprised that our rooms were not available. We were told to wait in the lobby.
We weren't the only ones. Another couple from Venice, celebrating their 6th Wedding Anniversary also sat with us. They had spent the last 2 hours outside near the pool and were anxious to get in their rooms as well. Both of us had made dinner reservations at the Maritana Grill and we were all hoping to relax in our rooms a bit before dinner.
At 5 p.m. we approached the reservation desk, only to be told by the woman behind the desk that our rooms were not ready yet and "this happens when you are sold out night after night". There were no apologies, no remorse was shown, no concerns. In fact the man behind the desk wouldn't even take the time to look at the other couple when he told them to keep waiting.
Although we asked to speak to the manager, no one ever showed up.
I also suggested that because we were loosing 1.5 hours of our time waiting, that we would appreciate a late check out time. The woman behind the desk insisted that she could not provide that to us, that we would have to call in the morning and request it ourselves.
At 5:20 p.m. We all decided to leave. Anniversaries or no anniversaries, it just wasn't right to be treated this way. The hotel was not cheap, and the service was not up to par.
IF THE DON CESAR IS SHORT OF STAFF, then they better hire more.
The current manager is the one at fault. Whoever he or she may be has certainly not trained the staff well. The disregard is coming from the top down.
What a true disappointment.

We just returned from a weekend stay. While my family enjoyed the ambiance and sevice the hotel provided, we were extremely dissapointed in our room. We had guaranteed reservations for a non-smoking room. Upon entering , it reeked of smoke. I immediately went to the front desk to request a non-smoking room but was curtly told the property was full and the hotel could not accomodate us. Rather than make a scene in front of a lobby filled with people, we retreated to the room and left the windows open during our stay. While the air conditioning gave us some relief from the heat, it was still very warm in the room. At least the fresh air abated some of the smell from the smoke. The Don Cesar detracted from what should have been a beautiful family getaway!
