“Great Resort for Families”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

This place deserves an "A-" letter grade overall. Family of 4 stayed in room 114, a gulf-view suite, from 3/9/2013 through 3/11/2013. This room is right over the restaurant so I would recommend a higher floor for a better view. There were not any noise issues. The service, from check-in to check-out, was very good. The employees were encountered (valet, pool attendants, room service, lounge, gift shop, ice cream shop) were helpful, courteous, and efficient. We were able to get into the Maritana Grille restaurant for breakfast and dinner, with no reservations, without waiting, however, the restaurant service was a little slow.

The beach was well maintained--clean with soft, powdery, white sand.

Our girls, ages 6 and 8, wanted to attend Camp CeSar Kids Camp during the evening to try some crafts and meet other kids, but it was only offered during the day. If something had been offered where kids could have had some early evening festivities in a structured setting, that would have been preferred. Most hotels of this caliber offer some sort of supervision in the evening that the kids can enjoy.

The only other gripe was that the pool was not warm. The weather was in the 70s during our stay. There was a cold breeze blowing in from the Gulf. If the air temperature had been in the upper 80s, the pool would have been refreshing. But, with cool weather, you need a warmer pool.

Room Tip: If you book a Gulf View Suite, request a higher floor.

I have reviewed the Loews Don Cesar before and recently HAD to go back for a wedding. I was smart this time to stay at the Pearl but, had to spend time at the Don. This hotel is even WORSE since I stayed last. DOGS EVERYWHERE! Big dogs, wet dogs, small dogs, barking dogs. Its just gross. I love animals but, this hotels is enough to make me re-think that. I went in my friends rooms that were very run down and out of date. They all have a musty wet dog smell to them and the DON explains this is character of the hotel. Don't be fooled by that! Just a excuse not to put any money in the place. Dogs walking through the bar areas and where your food is served. It is against the law in Florida but, no person around to enforce the law. I do not understand why Loews would want to be liable for this many dogs biting other guest or small children. I even saw two dogs with ladies in the SPA area and the smell was horrible. Dog poop and pee everywhere and I feel sorry for the poor employee that has to eventually get around to cleaning this up! Many wedding guest had dog poop on their shoes and the entire place smelled like a kennel. I have nothing good to say about this place. Nothing. Sorry.

Room Tip: I have no tip since all rooms Ive seen are run down, smelly and out of date.

We usually go to Florida for spring break, however this is the first year we decided to stay on the gulf side. Wow...what a great decision. It's a very casual and there's fun little beach towns all up and down the coast. There's lots to do for the kids... mini golf, the clearwater marina (you can see Winter the dolphin, from the movie), pirate cruises, and much more. The hotel is on a beautiful soft white beach, and even when the hotel's at full capacity, you don't feel crowded on the beach. There's plenty of room to stretch out and enjoy the day. The pool is great, with lots of chairs, music and a great bar. It's a historic hotel, so be warned that the rooms are smaller that you might be accustomed to, so I'd recommend that you upgrade to a jr. suite. That's what we did, and it was a good move. This gives you 2 double beds (yes..double) and a sitting room that has a sofa, 2 chairs, table and a desk. It's the perfect size for 4 and the sofa turns into a bed if needed.

The service has been great and we would definitely come back to visit. Again... great location...tons of restaurants in the area as well. You should rent a car so that you have the opportunity to enjoy everything.

Also... busch gardens is only 45 minutes away if your kids like amusement parks - we went...great coasters and lots of animal exhibits!

Room Tip: Upgrade to a jr. suite

Have been going to the Don since I was a child; it no longer has the magic it once had. Disappointing in every respect. Service is execrable--that is, if you can even get service, as it's understaffed. Many public areas of the hotel stink of fish from the restaurant, which we found nauseating. Things that used to be included in the resort fee no longer are; guests must pay to use a beach chair or lounge chair (the latter is 12 a day per lounge chair, 18 if you want an umbrella; cabanas are I believe 120 per day). The buffet, which used to be every day, is now weekends-only. The hotel is really an embarrassment; it no longer belongs in the Loews portfolio. We cut our trip short--it had become a joke--and we will not be returning.

You actually have to PAY to sit on chairs on the beach! To me, this is absurd! To pay >$400/room + resort fee (to use pool & wifi) + parking & not be able to relax on the beach, in front of your incredibly expensive hotel, for "free", seriously?!?!? We are currently staying here for 3 nights, I wish would could leave now!

Although this is a beautiful historic hotel on an amazing secluded beach it is just a plain old fashioned rip off. They nickle & dime you for every single thing: $10 for a beach lounger; $20 a day for "complimentry" wifi and this is on top of a $400 a night rate for a room that is so small it's actually claustrophobic. I have no idea how they can justify the rate.
I would not recommend this hotel or stay here again

I was very disappointed with my stay at this hotel. It looks like it should be fantastic, but we waited to be checked in for over 30 mins! Then had to carry our own bags (I don’t mind doing that but this place is suppose to be top notch!) and find our own way to the room. The room was nicely furnished, but no soap, shower hats etc, had to ask for them. No turndown, no water. In the morning 3 wakeup calls that were not requested. Then they had the cheek to charge 3 extra ‘taxes’, a resort fee and make us pay for parking. All in all a very disappointing wedding anniversary treat!
