“The Alden met our expectations”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2014

After cancelling a reservation at a Condo complex in St. Pete Beach and reviewing the positive reviews on TA, I booked a one bedroom pool view suite for my husband and myself at The Alden as an escape from our harsh Canadian winter. I called the resort one week prior to arrival and was informed that we were assigned to a Nassau Suite in Building 4. At that time, I requested a pool view room on the 3rd or 4th floor. On arrival, we were greeted by Beau who promptly provided us with our documents, a map, directions to our room (#619) and instructions for the complimentary WiFi. As this room is located on the top floor of Building 4, there was often a wait for the elevator (as the building has only one), but this was not a major inconvenience. There was very little noise from the elevator, even though it is located nearby. Room #619 provides a view of both pools, the Cabana Bar AND the beach from the large balcony-the latter an unexpected but pleasant surprise!

The entry door into this suite faces the parking lot/tennis courts and you enter directly into the bedroom, which has two (comfortable) queen size beds. The living room/kitchen area is quite large and complete with a stovetop/oven, full size refrigerator (including icemaker) and dishwasher. There are flat screen TVs in the living room and bedroom. On the last day of our stay, I discovered some water in front of the dishwasher and promptly mentioned this to our housekeeper, Alexa. Within an hour, a maintenance person arrived and later that afternoon, the dishwasher was replaced. Alexa was very pleasant, as were most of the resort staff. The grounds are well manicured and the pools and hot tub cleaned regularly. Laundry facilities are located at ground level and a “grab and go” convenience store can be found near the lobby where you can purchase basic necessities, beverages and snacks at very reasonable prices. I also appreciated the complimentary Keurig coffee machines and fruit in the lobby each morning.

As other TA reviewers have commented, the Alden is not a new resort but it is obvious that the owners have completed upgrades to many of the suites. In the case of Room 619, we noticed that the bathroom door was dirty/dingy (should be replaced) and the ceramic tile baseboards in the bathroom and closet required cleaning. I realize that this type of maintenance is not routine, but it is required periodically, just as we do in our own home.
That being said, The Alden is located in a prime location on beautiful St. Pete Beach, close to many local attractions and restaurants and provides excellent value compared to other nearby resorts. We will seriously consider a return visit to The Alden.

Room Tip: Room 619 (in Building 4) provides views of both pools, the Cabana Bar and the beach from the balcon...

A very comprehensive review and points well taken!

WE are going to complete a $265,000 renovation this fall, to the poolside suites building that is reviewed here.

All new kitchen and bathrooms, "back to the walls" and other renovations that will further enhance these very large suites.

Needed a week away, on the beach and at a reasonalble price. The Alden Suites worked well. A small kitchenette allowed us to fix easy breakfasts and light lunches and spend outr eveneings at many of the nearby restaurants. Many activites. The room was clean but the bed will need updating. The spring mattress was very firm but will need replacing soon. Would recommend this hotel for average rooms, good activities, and great location.

Room Tip: Ocean view are more expensive but these are in the new section so overall it may be worth the upgrad...

We came to the Alden Suites to hangout with family for the weekend and had a great experience. Check in was quick and easy and the front desk was very friendly. The hotel was older but updated and very clean. We consistently saw employees take the time to go the extra mile. The room we stayed in had 2 comfortable queen beds and a separate room with a pull out couch a full kitchen and a good size balcony that overlooked the gulf, the view was fantastic. They had areas to barbecue a little beach bar with a fire pit. There were many restaurants nearby but with the full kitchen we cooked in the room. I would recommend this location highly and will to everyone looking for a quality, reasonably priced family hotel on St. Petersburg beach, FL.

My daughter and I stayed in a Garden suite and loved it. The beds were very comfortable and we loved having our little kitchen. The suite has 2 nice flat screen TV's. We loved our location. It was a short walk through nicely landscaped grounds to the pools and the beach. Check in was a breeze and everyone was very friendly. Free coffee and newspapers daily. The beach is beautiful and we loved having the option to rent a cabana each day. The only thing I did not like was that it was not non smoking. Our room did not smell at all like smoke but there were several people staying there that smoked outside the rooms and I felt like I could smell it sometimes at the pool area. That being said, I would not hesitate to stay there again.

Thanks for the nice review...

Approximately 20% of the population smoke and although we are 100% non smoking in the suites and on the balconies, we cannot enforce a no smoking policy anywhere else outdoors, and for that I am sorry.

Other than that, thanks for the comments,

This is supposed to be a WONDERFUL hotel...............charged us $209 per night. I am 5' 7" and had to bend over to see the mirror while shaving because the mirror was so low.

A piece of "artwork" was mounted on the wall between the "kitchenette" and the "bedroom". The picture hung over the edge of the wall on the left side about 2" and, on the right side, about 2" of the wall was exposed.

While in the lobby a man arrived looking for a room and was quoted $105..........DOES NOT SOUND AT ALL FAIR TO ME.

On a positive side, the housekeeping staff were quite good and responsive.

Will I return????? You know the answer!!!!!

This guest was in one of our Courtyard Junior Suites and the mirror over the vanity in these suites is a bit lower than standard, due to the air conditioning unit equipment just above the vanity mirror. This is only on the first 2 floors of this building, and this is the first mention I have ever seen in this regard in over 13 years.

The rate overheard in the lobby was for one of our "motel rooms" of which we only have 4 and they are single queen, very small units in the villa buildings up front. The are not even advertised on our website, since they are used primarily for single night "walk in demand". They are about 1/2 the size of our 139 suites,l and therefore, they are the command the lowest rate in the hotel

Hope this clears up any misunderstandings.

Ditto another reviewer: Check-in was fast. The staff was outstanding and friendly. Our suite was absolutely HUGE (big living room, full-sized kitchen, huge bathroom and separate bedroom with really comfy beds) and it had been upgraded, clean, & the view from our room was amazing. The bartenders at the Cabana Bar were very pleasant. Housekeeping was great & staff are friendly. During our stay was wonderfu. The hotel is in great location. I recommend this hotel. We will definitely be back next year. Alden Suites is definitely one of the best values in St. Pete Beach. With kids its perfect! the beach was so beautiful here & easy access~ 2 very clean pools which made it nice for all. This hotel is not new by any means but that's what makes it great its old Florida! The bigger hotels down the way are to hectic and packed with loud music and over filled pools! Our kids could still use all the amenities they had to offer kids(for cost of course ) so that made it even nicer to come back to a quite relaxed area~ they had great grilling areas, tennis court and more! We will be back for sure~ thank you for a WARM spring break from this very cold hard winter:)

Rooms double size for half price, still great location. You won't regret it.

Room Tip: Rooms in the front (street side) are bigger and quieter. No restaurant on property but you can cook...

This is an old school feel property with some quirky and fun features. There are 2 pools, ping pong, volleyball, bean bag toss and hot tub. Rooms are not bad and the kitchenette is nice to have. Right on the beach and in the middle of a lot of cool tiki bars easily walkable down the beach. Cabana bar onsite us ok for happy hour. No live music when we were there however. Good a blue for the money.

The Alden's location is excellent in that we are:

1) Right in the middle of the large hotel district
2) At the widest section of the white sandy beach, by far
3) Walking distance (via beach or sidewalk) to countless great restaurants, laid back beach bars, high energy beach bars / dance clubs.

You really never need to get in a car, unless it's Free Beach Ride back from eating too much ice cream at Twistee Treat and the 5 other ice cream places up and down the beach!

Thanks for the kind comments, they do not go unnoticed
