“A/C is Motion Sensored?!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

1. Arrived at noon and were told they would alert housekeeping we were on premises so they could get room ready, but didn't get a call until 4PM, which I realize IS checkin time but don't get our hopes up for being sooner if not possible.
2. Walked in the room to a horrible smell of deep fried food. It smelled as if it was just cooked so maybe that is why we could not have our room sooner? If the housekeeper JUST left, couldn't they spray some air freshener?
3. DEAL BREAKER! Room was HOT! We turned down the thermostat and went out to dinner, walked the beach and came back and it was STILL HOT. We went to bed thinking it would cool down and it was too late and we were too tired to call the office. I finally realized the thermostat is MOTION SENSORED. Everytime I got up to check it (literally every 10 minutes), it would come back on the second my feet hit the floor! By 5 AM, I realized I could sit up in bed and flail my arms around to get it to come back on. I didn't sleep a wink. So much for a relaxing stay-cation.

I inquired this morning with the front desk and they indicated this is a known problem and they can disable the motion sensor. Wish they would do that automatically. It makes no sense to have the A/C Motion Sensored while you sleep!

Disappointed and exhausted!

Room Tip: If you have a problem with the A/C, notify the front desk immediately. They indicated this is a know...

Regarding the A/C motion sensor:

This is very common in most hotels today, in an effort to conserve energy. However, the units are programmed to never go above 78 degrees in the warmer months, no matter if there is motion in the suite or not. If there is motion detected in the suite, the thermostats are able to be set at 68 degrees and will run until that temp is met.

They may have been a slight malfunction in this suite and our Maintenance staff has looked into this.

We are sorry for your discomfort, but I can assure you that this is a rare occasion and most guests are happy with 78 degrees when there is no motion in the suite.

Excellent staff, nice rooms, great views. I only gave a 3 on the rooms due to the location of ours (elevator outside) we got to hear everyone coming and going. Plus side elevator was so slow everyone used the stairs unless loading or unloading overall great vacation and we will be back

Thanks for the review comments...I am surprised to hear that the elevator outside your suite was loud enough to cause an issue, we have them serviced quite often, but we will look into this ASAP

Upon arriving at our hotel room, we opened the door and realized there was a bed 1 step inside the door. The entire hotel room had a bad odor, the bedroom was very dated, small and dark. After further examination, there were various spots in the carpet that were torn. The bathroom looked like it had not been updated since the 70's and was super small. There was a small dark hallway which led to the small, cramped kitchen and living area. A portion of the counter was cut out in order for the refrigerator door to open. The 'balcony' communicated by the representative is actually about 2 feet wide and should not be considered a balcony. We were in the room about 15 minutes, returned to the front desk and request a refund on our deposit as well as a request to check out immediately. The person we spoke with was named Beau.

We explained to Beau the various issues with the room in addition to the fact the room was not even close to resemble what is advertised on their website. Beau responded by saying he could not refund our deposit even after we explained the issues we had with the hotel room.
I asked to speak with a manager. Beau left the front desk for a few minutes and returned to say 'the manager is busy.' I asked for the manager's name, which he said was Buddy.
In addition I asked if I could please wait to speak with Buddy and Beau responded by saying 'the manager will be tied up for awhile and will not be able to speak with you.' He went on to further say 'I am the night manager.' I found this very odd since it was about 4:00pm in the afternoon and he already said another person was the manager.

I asked Beau for the name of the owner of the hotel and he refused to give me any information in my efforts to resolve this problem. We left without our deposit refunded.

In the end we found a hotel up the street which was $40/night less expensive, clean, had an actual bedroom, did not smell, did not have torn carpet, a decent size kitchen, living room and a real balcony.

I researched this review with our Front Office Manager, who was the Manager on Duty at the time of this issue.

I am sorry that this guest was not happy with the Gulf front suite that she had reserved, but please allow me to respond to her issues:

1) The "Barbados Suite" has a bedroom up front as you enter, and it has two queen beds, a thin screen TV, a closest, and "typical" bedroom furniture. In the middle of the suite is a perfectly sized bathroom. In the back of the suite is a living room / kitchen area with a full kitchen, sofa sleeper, another thin screen TV, a small dining table, and one of only 6 "stand up" balconies (the other 56 Gulf front suites have full size balconies with chairs and a table). When this suite type is reserved (less costly than the other Gulf front suites) it is clearly communicated to the guest that they will not have a full size balcony, one of the reasons that we do not charge as much for this suite type. This suite is over 500 sq. feet, which is about 160 sq. feet larger than a typical hotel "room". This suite was TOTALLY renovated, back to the walls just four years ago, and it not "dated" The photos on the web site are less than a year old. New bedding was just completed less than 3 months ago!

2) This guest did not like this suite, for some reasons, and wanted their one night deposit back, but we had Housekeeping go right up to inspect the suite and there was absolutely nothing wrong with it, and the carpet looked fine, and the suite did not smell.

3) In the mean time, our Front Office Manager was on the phone with another guest when this guest was demanding their non refundable deposit back. By the time he arrived at the front desk to meet these guests, they were gone from the lobby. The guests were overheard by the Night Manager saying "we will get our money back one way or another"

In summary, it is our professional opinion that there was nothing wrong with this suite and the guests were just looking for any reason to get out of their one night deposit. Please look at other reviews of the Gulf front suites to find that this review appears to be highly exaggerated

Thanks for listening,

Stayed at the Alden for five days starting July 15th. The hotel is older but had everything we needed. Pools and hot tubs were nice and the beach and ocean were amazing. The grocery store is about ten blocks away , not around the corner like one review states but it is walkable. The Toasted Monkey, two hotels down has great happy hour prices. We enjoyed our stay very much!

Glad you enjoyed your stay at Alden Suites!

The hot tub mentioned in this review is a brand new (opened Feb 2013) 12-person in ground hot tub with music, beautiful landscaping and gazebo cover, that is a big hit with our guests.

The beach, itself, was voted the Number 1 in the country by Trip Advisor!

We stayed here in early June (for a Tiki Party being held at another, expensive/kitschy hotel a few doors down). It was one of the cheaper options and did not require a two night stay as many do, or have hidden fees. Check in/out was super easy. The price was good and was even better after getting a FL resident discount. The room was nice with a 2 seater kitchen table, kitchenette, sofa and king size bed. The only issue was the bed was old and uncomfortable (the springs had sprung). But otherwise, we really enjoyed our stay. There were also 2 seats outside your front door (divided a bit between rooms for a quasi-privacy). We took advantage of the 2 for 1 drink coupon at their beach bar before taking a dip in the water, then heading to a nearby beach bar, Toasted Monkey, and then on to the Tiki Party. I live in the area, so this was a 'staycation', and our beach is beautiful!
*The hotel is also dog friendly, which I liked and wished I would've brought my pup with us. - I didn't see any dogs while I was there.

Room Tip: They were doing a lot of parking lot construction when we were there.

Thanks for the nice comments...

Unlike many St Pete Beach hotels, we do not typically require a 2-night stay during weekends, except for major holiday weekends.

I am concerned about your bed comment, as the beds in the suite type you stayed in, were installed brand new just 3 years ago, in late 2010. I will look into that specific King bed and see if it needs replacing.

The Alden has a good sample of pet friendly suites and they are in huge demand, most of the year

My husband and I stayed here for our first anniversary (August 2007). We did not plan ahead or read any reviews. We drove the boulevard and chose this place. We wanted an ocean view, but did not have one the first night. We then switched rooms for the remainder of our stay. The hotel seemed somewhat dated, but was clean enough. Once we moved to the ocean view room, we enjoyed our stay more because we had a nice balcony. The pool was nice enough. This was right on the beach, which was our reason for staying at this property. We do not intend to stay here in the future as there are nicer, newly renovated places nearby.

The Alden is an older hotel, but we pride ourselves on the fact that we spend, on average, about $400,000 per year on constant renovations, to keep the property in a "fresh" condition. We renovate 20-30 of the suites every year (143 total suites) so that no one suite type is overlooked in the cycle of renovations.

This is our second year staying at Alden Resort and Suites. We love the convenience of having a kitchen without giving up the ocean front view. Beach is gorgeous plus the Alden has 2 pools, tennis courts, ping pong, shuffle board, and corn hole. Perfect for our 10 yr old. Overall, great value for the amenities.
