“Great family vacation at the Alden”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2008

This is a nice family hotel. Nothing fancy, but nice. If you have high expectations of a fancy five star hotel, you may not be satisfied, but if you have realistic expectations for family fun then you will love it. The staff is very helpful and friendly. I upgraded to a beachfront room by calling the hotel directly - by doing this they gave you a better room that was beachfront, that was not just run of the house (which is what you get if you upgrade on Expedia). The view is definitely worth the extra money. It is just perfect for some quality beach time. If you have small kids, be sure and go to Captain Memo's pirate cruise in Clearwater- my kids said that was their 'best day ever'! Busch Gardens was great too. Wonderful vacation.

The Alden is on a strip of lots of hotels and restaurants; many of the hotels seem indistinguishable from each other. I went with my boyfriend for a 5 day getaway and overall we had a good experience. We stayed in building #3 (in the middle) in a Bermuda suite with a king-sized bed. The room was very clean and well-cared for; the cleaning service was excellent. Based on other reviews, I expected the room to be cleaned late in the day but I did not find that to be the case. In fact, sometimes the cleaning staff came while we were still in bed in the morning! It was GREAT to be on the top floor with no people above us, but we stayed in room 320, which is directly next to the cleaning staff closet. All of the staff congregated there at 8:00 each morning as they started their shift, and their noise woke me up each day. Also, there are loud birds chirping in the morning so if that bothers you, then you may want to bring ear plugs. There are many fun things to do at the resort (tennis, shuffleboard, pools, etc.) but we didn't do most as we went to the beach each day. I highly recommend buying cheap beach chairs at CVS or another store down the street and using those, as it costs 18 dollars per day (or 6 dollars per hour) to rent the wooden lounge chairs on the beach. This cost can add up! It would be much cheaper to buy chairs and leave them behind. The 2 outdoor pools and hot tubs are open until 11pm, which is nice. We enjoyed the Cabana Beach Bar for a late afternoon cocktail but were surprised by how early it closed in the evening. Also, beware of "bar hop" groups who travel from bar to bar on the beach. When I was returning to the beach one afternoon, I got caught up in a huge crowd and had to elbow my way on to the beach. The public areas (hallways, passageways) of the Alden are a bit dirty but the pool areas were fine. The game room is disappointing as is the exercise room. No restaurant at the hotel but plenty withing walking distance. Our best meal of the vacation (by far) was dinner at Snapper's directly across the street; a bit pricier and more upscale but WELL worth it (and you can still dress casually). Also highly recommend Skidder's across the street for breakfast as well as Beverly's La Croisette just north of the hotel about 1/2 mile (the BEST breakfast, in our opinion). John's Pass is about 15 minutes north and is very touristy but worth a visit; eat at Sculley's. We enjoyed Pass-A-Grille about 7 miles to the south of the Alden and especially enjoyed the rooftop bar at Hurricane. The Alden kindly let us check in a few hours early because our room was ready and we were there early; they also allowed us to stay up until 8pm on our last day for an extra 50 dollars. The staff was very helpful and gave us lots of information. I probably wouldn't go back to St. Pete Beach or the Alden but not because it was terrible. The Alden is definitely family-oriented and was not well-suited for us as a couple.

This hotel met our expectatations and needs. We stayed in the Bermuda Suite. I think the internet pictures make the resort look much better than it actually is but for the price it was a good value and experience. Our room was clean, the bed was comfortable, the kitchen amenities were nice, the staff was courteous, and we felt safe. The spa and pools were also nice. The room was somewhat outdated, but the bed who goes on vacation to sit in the room!! The beach is absolutely awesome!!!! I would stay at the Alden again.

We (two adults and two children) stayed at the Alden for six nights. We have a two room suite in the Nassau building, closest to the road. The room was not elaborate but was what we needed. Plenty of room in the bedroom and also in the livingroom/kitchen area. There was plenty of space for clothes and a large closet. The sink was outside the bathroom and came in handy with four of us. The balcony overlooked the pool. The door opened to a view of the tennis courts which were located above the parking lot. Housekeeping did a great job keeping the room clean. Sometimes they didn't get to our room until 4:00 or so, wasn't a problem for us.

The beach was great but it was a bit of a walk. Not a hindrance, but enough of a distance that you thought twice about going back to the room. The only chairs on the beach are ones that need to be rented and they are a good distance from the water. If we returned we would buy chairs and carry them to the beach. We didn't go to the beach bar but it looked like a good place to hang out. Water was clear and beautiful.

The pool was great. The water temperature was perfect and plenty of chairs/tables around the pool. There are two pools, plenty of room for everyone.

We ate at Snappers across the road, great food- highly recommend it. There is also a Subway and Pizza place nearby, didn't use them but saw that others did. Although there isn't food at the Alden you could easily walk to a variety of places.

My only complaint was that the elevators seemed to take a bit of a time and there were rumors about them getting stuck. This certainly didn't impact my vacation but was a bit of an annoyance.

My wife and I and our two kids (ages 3 and 1) stayed 4 nights at the Alden just last week. We spent the first night in one of the Nassau suites, but then upgraded to a gulf view Cayman suite for the last three nights. The extra $40 per night for the Cayman suite was definitely worth it as the views and sounds of the ocean from our balcony were great. The suites are great for families with small children. During their naps and early bedtime, we were able to stay in the living room & balcony without disturbing them. The only minor problem is that the door to the outside was right in the bedroom, so it was tough for one of us to leave the suite without disturbing the kids. The decor of the rooms was a bit dated (particularly the dark green carpeting), but everything was clean and functional.

The hotel staff was exceptional, from the hotel reception to the housekeeping staff. Very courteous and very helpful.

The swimming pools were nice although the water was salty. The playground was a nice feature and was conveniently located next to the cabana bar. We actually found a great public playground for kids several blocks south of the Alden (turn left just before the Walgreen's-- it's not even a block off of Gulf Blvd).

Overall we were very pleased with the Alden. It's not luxury, but it's a good value with a great location right on the beach, and it fit our needs perfectly.

By the way, we weren't overly impressed with the dining options in town. We ate at Monster Pizza, Woody's Waterfront and Gigi's. Monster Pizza and Gigi's were pretty good but not great. We read a lot of favorable reviews about Woody's but we were very disappointed (poor service, everything was very greasy, below average fish fry, and after all that it was cash only).

Right on the beach, this place is simple and family oriented. The suite we had on the 6th floor had a wonderful ocean view from the balcony. Although plain in decor, the two room suite with a little kitchenette suited the needs of our family for a 5 day stay. There are two pools (one shallower for the kids), a hot tub, a playground, a beach front bar (having a cocktail while watching the kids frolic was a pleasant treat) and the beach, all right there. Several restaurants of different types and price points are within walking distance.

We recently returned from our second stay at the Alden Beach. We are a family of 5 with three children and we had an amazing time. I can not wait to return.
We stayed in one of the villa rooms which is near the back of the resort(closer to road than ocean) thought that it might be a far walk when wanting to go to beach. It was not. Our three children under 7 had no problem with the walk. The room was wonderful and service was excellant. We had stayed here before so we knew that it was not a 5star hotel but it is a great family place and the suite style with kitchen is great when you have little kids.
We loved the ocean and the pools were great. Never thought that they were too crowded. The kids loved the playground.
I would defiantly reccommend this hotel to anyone looking for a nice beach hotel with a family atmosphere.
