“Players Sports Bar”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2013

What an excellent experience at the Sports Bar at the Beachcomber! Lots of TV's .. and the most gracious and funny bartender Simon made sure that the game that I wanted to watch got on the tv closest to me was on. Eventho there are lots of tv's everywhere, he even asked if I would like to have the sound turned up so I could actually hear the game ... Nice touch Simon! I highly recommend Players to anyone staying at St Pete Beach looking for a really cool sports bar with lots of tv's, great drinks and food ... and a really great bartender! Thank you Simon for the great time!!

We came to the beachcomber for a 7-day vacation and it was really nice. The staff here is amazing and really want you to feel welcome. The rooms are a bit outdated and we were kind of disappointed when we first arrived but after seeing other hotels near, we were glad to stay here after all! There's not a lot of parking but if you don't plan to arrive too late it shouldn't be a problem. Also there's loud music every night until 3 am but if you wear earplugs you'll be fine. The area around the pools is really nice to look at and to take pictures. The pools are warm, the rooms are clean. Not much to complain about.

Room Tip: If you don't like hearing music at night, don't take a room near the beach side.

This was our first visit to St. Pete Beach, and we wanted to stay on the beach versus being further inland.

The Good:

- Very friendly staff - outstanding. They really go out of their way to say hello and make you feel welcome.

- The beach itself is fantastic - a long, beautiful, wide stretch of gorgeous sand, with commerce well away from the beach itself.

- Parking and amenities are good. By all means park up front by the street if possible to avoid having to back up a long distance on the sides. Free wifi is a nice touch, and the music at Jimmy B's is nice.

- Great location, close to shops and restaurants. We walked almost everywhere.

- We booked our room through Hotwire, so the value of the room was good.

Not So Good:

- It was cold while we were in St. Pete Beach, so we needed to run the room heater. Loud.....OMG loud....to the point you were awakened every time it ran, which was a lot. It came down to a choice - freeze and sleep well, or be warm and wake up frequently.

- The music at Jimmy B.'s is a curse as well as a blessing, as the room insulation is poor - you will hear the noise until late. Other reviewers are correct in saying that some patrons are loud.

- The Platinum / Player's card is a joke. You fill out a form, but you don't get the card or discounts for a week. What's the point if the benefit isn't immediate? Why bother? Please rethink your approach, Beachcomber.

- Light pollution. We like pitch-black rooms to sleep in, but the window curtains did a poor job of blocking out the exterior lights in the parking lot.

- The rooms are getting old and tired-looking. I have to agree with other reviewers that the Beachcomer needs a facelift.

Bottom line: The Beachcomber has a lot of good things going for it - they try VERY hard to ensure you will enjoy your visit. I REALLY wanted to like it. I walk away feeling like I had a good visit, but not good enough where I would put the Beachcomber high on my list of candidate hotels for a next visit - I would look at other options first.

Room Tip: Get a room up by the lobby - away from the beach bar - to reduce noise levels. Ask for a room with...

We were able to check in early & the front desk girls were very nice. Hotel is on the older side, but very clean. It is just a short walk to the beach. The garden & pool areas are beautiful. Unfortunately, it was too cold to enjoy the heated pools or the beach.: ( I also did not like that you had to walk around or thru the bar to get to the beach.: ( We enjoyed the music at the beach bar & the sunset, but felt the drinks were pricey. Even tho our room was at the garden, the bar patrons were VERY loud when the bar closed & they walked past our door on the way out. The rooms were not very noise-proof. There is a 7-11 across the street with a redbox & a great produce & Greek deli just up the street. I probably would have enjoyed everything better if the weather was hotter - but it wasn't the fault of the hotel. The parking is very close, but we always had a spot.

We just got back from a 6 day trip at the Beachcomber. We did our homework we read the reviews on trip advisor but still decided to stay at the Beachcomber. The people at the Beachcomber were all very nice, friendly and helpful that part is true. Also what was true is the resort is the serious need of a update. At first glance the rooms look great but then you open the curtains and turn on the lights and you find out looks are deceiving. The carpet was filthy dirty, always wear shoes in the room otherwise your feet will be totally black. I brought my own lysol wipes to wipe everything down. The room had a nice flat screen TV and dvd player. The beds have a foam on them and are not to bad. The bathroom is very small with one outlet that was on the wall where the light switch was. So if you plugged in a curling iron or flat iron it has to be plugged in that outlet which is behind you. Also be prepared to use very small bleached scratchy towels to dry off with. Yes there was odor from the ac unit but it was expected it is a old room conditioner, I sprayed it everyday with lysol. Our room was on the second floor near the pool and Jimmy B's. It was nice but even though we were on the second floor we could still hear the people who sat at the bar especially when they are leaving, rude people who didn't know what quiet meant after 11 at night. The grounds inside the the Beachcomber were very nice, the pool was just okay. There are not alot of chairs at the pool. Our room came with a mini fridge and coffee maker. Still surprised they just didn't put a small micro wave in the room. There are rooms that have the kitchenettes in them. We didn't need the mini kitchen, just a micro wave would have been nice. It is good they don't charge a resort fee like the other hotels do in the area. If you want to use a cabana on the beach just pay for it. The no resort fee is great. Parking totally sucked at the hotel. When you have to park on the side of the hotel you can only pull in. After that you have to back up to get out, it is very tight to do it. The 2 restaraunts are so okay they have the same menu. If you eat up in Jimmy B's the food you order comes from Players up front. The food is all bar food sandwiches and no salads or dinner entries. Make sure you get a Players card if you are gonna eat and drink there. It will help you save 10 percent and get happy hour prices. Otherwise the well drinks start at 7.50 and beers start at 3.95. The location is great for this hotel. Right on the beach and near places to eat. Would we stay at this hotel again, no not for us. Guaranted we did not spend much time in the room, but still would like to have had a better updated room. I can understand why some people come back year after year, no resort fee, cheaper priced rooms, but this family will go and get a condo next year and get the thngs we want.

Room Tip: Publix is down the street about a mile to get groceries for the room

Great motel style hotel in fantastic location on St Pete's Beach. Friendly staff, plenty parking and loads of bars and restaraunts within easy walking distance. two great bars, especailly Jimmy B's which has live music most nights and in the afternoon at weekends. Would not hesitate to return.

Room Tip: Trolley bus to St Petersburg stops right outside and at 4 dollars a trip to the pier well worth it t...

All the staff at the hotel were wonderful. The condition of the hotel was a great disappointment. The room had an odor to it. It was hard to determine what it was - might have been old paint. The air-conditioning unit was right beside a bed and was extremely noisy. The door to the room was very difficult to open, lock, and close - so difficult, in fact, that one day the cleaning staff left our door open when they finished cleaning. The swimming pool, although a nice size and had bar service, really could have been cleaner. Proximity to the beach and Jimmy B's were great, but having a room on the path from the bar to the hotel lobby made for some rather noisy nights between 1 and 3 am.

Room Tip: Pick a room on an upper floor and shoot for a kitchen unit.
