I recently spent 4 nights for the first time at the Bon Aire resort on St. Pete Beach and had a wonderful time. The hotel is on a wide expanse of beach and all the rooms have easy access to the beach due to the two story design. No long elevator waits here and, the location couldn't be better.
The resort is very well kept and has a "retro" feel to it. We were told the owners built the business from the ground up and it has stayed in the family for three generations. The grounds are immaculate, pools are warm and front desk staff were pleasant, helpful and informative. I am particular about cleanliness and I found our room to be very clean and our housekeeper willing to please if we wanted extra towels etc. The only disappointment that we had was that we tried to check in at 1 pm and our room wasn't ready until right around 3. (Check in time was actually 4 pm and we hadn't read our information very carefully)
One of the best things is Sandbar Bill's which is a little beach bar right behind the motel and directly on the beach. I liked it for many, many reasons which included great drinks, sunsets, friendly people, and a menu that was surprisingly diverse....everything from awesome burgers to a unique variety of wraps.
Overall, though, the resort is a great value, especially for families. While it isn't the Ritz Carlton, if you want a laid back atmosphere, clean room or suite and a great beach location, you can't beat this place.
