“Once Again an Excellent Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

This is by far the best full service hotel on St Pete Beach. You can't beat the amenities that other beach places charge for free parking, resort fees etc. I have stayed here many times over the years and will continue to stay here exclusively.

Just returned from a weekend vacation, and we had a great time. Overall, the hotel is nice, I wouldn't say it's the best but it's far from terrible and I'd go back again for sure. When compared to some of the other large resort style hotels on the strip, this one doesn't charge a resort fee, parking fee, etc. so your rate is what you pay. Bongo's was nice, good food and drinks and not over priced. The beach view from Bongo's is excellent, and a great way to relax and take in the beach while having a relaxing lunch. Pool was a bit small but we didn't even use it because the beach was so nice. Hotel location is perfect, walk to Publix, restaurants, fast food and gift shops. I'd agree it may be getting close to time where the hotel could use an update, but it's still not bad, and worth what we paid per night based on the location and what other hotels are charging. We were on the 9th floor and had a partial ocean view room which had a perfect side view of the beach, so it was nice to sit out on the balcony. There was a beach competition going on when we were there that started at 8am on Saturday so it was a bit noisy that day but the other days were fine. The outdoor bands wind down at 10:30 pm due to noise ordinances so it's fairly quiet at night after that time as well.

Room Tip: High floor. The partial ocean view room had a good view of the beach from the side so glad we didn...

Just returned from our stay at the GP (4/14 - 4/19). Initially booked the room in Feb. based on the great reviews, then got scared as vacation day approached and starting reading lots of more recent, bad reviews. However, we wanted something on the beach, with a great view of the ocean so we paid extra for an upper floor, ocean-facing room - we were in room 814. It also looked like when we we searching, most other places were only two or three stories tall - so they wouldn't have that great an ocean view.

PROs - Excellent location right on the beach. Ocean-view room had a great view and large windows and a small balcony to enjoy it from. Everyone on the staff we encountered was friendly and attentive. From the check-in desk, to bartenders, room service, wait staff, etc. - all were pleasant to deal with. Ample free parking. The food (Bongos, Spinners, Room Service - we didn't do the breakfast buffet) was excellent and not overly pricey. The free lobby coffee was very good. The elevators did not seem as slow as other reviewers found...we seldom waited more than a minute for one and trips to/from lobby and 8th floor were pretty quick. Room had a microwave and refrigerator. Room did not reek of smoke like some others had complained about.

CONs - Live music EVERY day from 1:30PM to 10:30PM. Most of the acts were pretty talentless, but they were all LOUD - as in "hear the music with your windows and doors closed eight floors away and the AC running" loud. I can see drawing people with live music on weekend afternoons and nights, but there's no need for it on weeknights when people want to sleep - or get up early the next day for a flight out. It was even annoyingly loud sitting out by the pool during the afternoon. Cutting the days or hours would save the place some money to update various other features....like....

The dated exterior (large cracks and worn paint) and rooms (dirty windows, cracked ceiling over windows, cracked floor tiles, need more shelf space in bathroom, cheap plastic "attached to the rod" hangers). It was in the mid-80's every day - had to set the AC on about 63 to keep the room comfortable...not sure what happens when it's in the 90's outside. The towels were pretty threadbare - the ones for the pool/fitness/beach and the guest rooms. They had about 50 cable channels (with free HBO!) and the room had a nice 32" flat screen TV, but all the channels were standard definition - a total waste of the HD screen. Hallways were warm. Fitness center equipment was old - no place to hold water bottles or iPods. No wipes for the equipment, and they need a fan or two for air circulation.

A couple nits with the staff. When we arrived it was about 2PM and our room wasn't ready - front desk Julie put a rush on the room cleaning, took our cell number, and promised to call when it was ready. We took a quick stroll around the hotel, then had a late lunch at Bongos and then sat around waiting for her call - finally at 3:45 we walked to the front desk to another clerk and asked about our room - "oh yes - it's ready"....not sure how long it was ready, but Julie didn't follow through on the promised call. The other nit was when we went to checkout - granted it was 5AM, but there was no one on the desk....we waited around a couple minutes, then I rang the front desk from the house phone. The clerk must have heard the phone and came in from outside, where she was smoking, to finally check us out.

BOTTOM LINE: It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great either - kinda "Meh". Would we stay here again? No. Would we have lunch at Bongos or Dinner at Spinners if we came back? Yes.

Room Tip: If you want something quiet - stay on the northeast side...but you'll sacrifice the view.

Worst Hotel stay I have ever had. I h ave stayed at lower grade hotels for significantly less and was treated like gold. Had a restful QUIET night stay and had a cleaner room. Problems: Doors SLAM when closed and have no sound insulation. Hallways are boiling hot. Hotel is extremely noisy. Bathroom and room were filthy with hair everywhere and rust in the sink. Shampoo and soap scum all over shower curtain...just disgusting. I was in such a rush to get out after getting only 3 hours of sleep that I Forgot my sneakers. The hotel charged me $13 to ship it 2 hours away. What a joke. Spend the extra money and stay at the Don Cesar! I Will say that at least the location is EXCELLENT. Its right on the beach which is gorgeous and in the heart of St Pete Beach. The rotating restaurant and view from it are amazing as well.

Room Tip: Spend the extra money and stay at the Don Cesar or Tradewinds. Both are much nicer and worth the mon...

I got married at the hotel and had the perfect wedding. They treated all my guests wonderful and worked with me every step of the way to make the day what I wanted it to be. I had a great wedding on the beach and a reception in one of the ballrooms on the top floor overlooking the ocean. Instead of stressing over details they let me enjoy myself for the special day! I am going back next week to spend my one year wedding anniversary at the hotel!

It can be noisy on Saturdays on the beach....it is a city beach. But there is a lot of fun to be had with the restaurants, volleyball, beach, sea, sun, boating and more! Maybe I am biased after being married at the location but I think the staff will take care of you whatever you are there for!

Room Tip: The ocean front is a little more but worth it!

When we visit St. Pete Beach the Grand Plaza is always our hotel choice. Once again we were not disappointed. The staff is very friendly and the rooms are always extremely clean. On this visit we stayed in penthouse suite #6. On our past visits we have stayed in an ocean front room and a bay room. When we arrived on this visit we were upgraded to a penthouse suite. What a dream come true for a couple who could never afford a penthouse suite. We are SO grateful!! The suite was huge! It had two king beds, a living room area with a large screen TV, a dining area with a beautiful table/chairs, a mini bar area, a larger bathroom. The beds were extremely comfortable. The view was AMAZING! One wall of windows from floor to ceiling. From one window we could see the beautiful bay and from the other window the Gulf of MX. We had dinner at the revolving restaurant Spinners. The food was delicious and service was great. Our waiter Chris was extremely upbeat and made sure our dining experience was a great one. There is a tiki bar by the beach where you can have drinks and something to eat. The pool is very nice and the sunbathing area is quite large. Of course you also have the beautiful clean beach area to soak up the sun. There are covered lounge chairs for rent on the beach. This hotel has never disappointed us and we will continue to keep going back.

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper you may want to choose a room on the north side or front of the building...

This place has more weddings than Vegas. Along with the weddings comes the drunk wedding party stay overs. I was woken at midnight Friday and Saturday nights with drunk people running around the halls, slamming doors in the very noisy cave like hallways, yelling and screaming. A call down stairs to the front desk proved useless as the partying went on. I guess the wedding party's get more leeway than regular paying guest.

The exercise room is in the basement with no ventilation and dated equipment. No wonder I was the only one there in the morning. The single pool is small and full of kids. The rooms are dated although appeared clean.

The plus side of the stay is the walk out the back directly onto the beach. The revolving restaurant on the roof (Spinners) is worth the visit, but you don't have to stay here to spend your money there.

Overall I would not return!
