“Great location for reasonable price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

We stayed on a weekend in January and were happy with our stay. Booked a bayside room for a better price but were happy to get a partial view of the ocean and could watch the sunset from our balcony. The room was spacious with a relatively comfortable bed, average bathroom. No thrills or special additions but did come with a fridge and microwave. Sometimes there is a long wait for the 2 elevators but if you stay on the first few floors you can just take the stairs. Adequate but confusing parking, the front desk did not explain how to get to the garage very well. Spinning restaurant is very nice with good views and beachfront bar average food and drinks. Pool is heated with lounge chairs. Beach is nice but you will have to pay $20 for two chaise lounges. Beware of wedding crowds as hotel has a package deal for weddings on the beach. Plenty of things to do in the area with many restaurants within walking distance. There is a liquor store across the street which you can use, with a decent selection of beer and wine for a better price than the bar. Would stay here again if in the area.

We spent 5 nights in a Gulf front room in late December/Early January. We lucked out on weather and had a bunch of wonderful warm sunny beach days. The hotel is very comfortable, we ate and drank regularly at Bongo's, the on-site beach front restaurant and bar. It was friendly, the food was good and reasonable, and the hotel staff were extremely helpful.

It is within walking distance of lots of places to eat and drink, and the entire experience was great.

The only thing that keeps me from making it a 5 star is that the room we had was a little "quirky". Since the building is round, lots of the rooms are wedge-shaped, and in our case, we had great views of the beach and Gulf of Mexico from our room and balcony, the TV was only viewable from the bed. Not a deal breaker, but a little odd.

Room Tip: I'd definitely go for the Gulf view or partial view rooms.

My husband and I stayed just got back from our vacation where we stayed at this hotel. We had a good time. That being said here are my pros and cons to this hotel

PROS:
- mostly friendly staff - Michael was very nice and we felt very welcome. Gift shop staff needs some help...we had to wake him up a few times when we wanted to buy something...he sleeps a lot and snores sitting in his chair behind his desk.
- BONGOS - The restaurant bar outside is amazing. I think that the hotel would be very blah and mundane without Bongos. This bar makes the hotel. It is fun and exactly the type of atmosphere we wanted on vacation. We loved the live music...it was amazing! The wait staff there was also wonderful.
- The location...you can't beat the location of this hotel. The beach is beautiful.

CONS:
- Small rooms...The rooms in this hotel are very small and the entire hotel is very outdated. I didn't mind the room size as much as the bathroom size.
- VERY Small bathrooms....The bathrooms in the room are very tiny. It fits one small person at any given time and has no room to put any personal items.
- Not very clean....My husband and I are not picky so we did not complain, but our room was not clean. This hotel gives the appearance of clean which is why I think some people say it is clean in their reviews. Our room was gross. There were hairs ALL OVER the bathroom when we got there. I had some travel lysol wipes from the plane so I basically did a little once over myself. It was filthy.
- Very outdated....saying this hotel is from the 80s is almost an understatement. There is still mirrored ceiling tiles that are rusted and not level. The decor is hilarious...very very old pictures and furniture and lighting. The pool is outdated with very old tile. The exterior is falling apart in places and needs a lot of work and repainting. I really didn't like that every single air conditioner had a long tube attached on the balcony that led over the edge for all the water to drain. So when you were on your balcony you had to be careful not to get dripped on by the air conditioners above you. I got dripped on a lot.
- OLD Plumbing. It took us quite a while to figure out the toilet in our room. It did not flush very easily and you had to sort of go through a little routine. After it flushed it would run constantly so you had to jiggle the handle or it would run and make constant noise. After visiting a few different bathrooms it was clear it was consistent throughout. Our toilet leaked and we were greeted by a puddle of toilet water on the floor when we got there. The staff did fix the issue promptly though.
- Very slow elevators. We were only on the 4th floor though thankfully so we could use the stairs when it took too long.

I would not return to this hotel. I would stay elswhere on St. Pete Beach, but I would make Bongos my bar of choice on my return visit.

Room Tip: Get a room up high(if you don't mind the elevator wait) and get OCEAN FRONT

Great hotel with restaurant options, we just ate a Bongo's on the beach-weather was to great to go indoors. Our meals were of excellent value. The only complaint I have is with the evevator, the elevator was used by hotel quest and wedding quests for the funtion on the 8th floor.

This is a nice property. But the views vary widely. There are rooms that actually face a wall and others that overlook the ocean. At check-in they always say you have booked a Room with limited view and give you the option to upgrade for an additional fee. The "view rooms" seem to be better maintained.

The on site restaurants are better than average hotel restaurants. Room service is fast. The breakfast buffet is really good with a great selection and courteous servers.

Overall, it is exceptionally clean, convenient, beautiful views and nice staff.

Room Tip: Do not accept the anything on the 2nd floor other than ocean view. Especially the "limited view...

This trip was a weekend getaway to relax in some warm weather. We were pleasantly surprised by the hotel. The room was very comfortable, including the bed. The view of the Gulf was spectacular. The best part of the whole experience was the staff. All of the staff was very pleasant and helpful all the time. A special thank you to Michelle who served us at the Bongo's beach bar and grill. The location is very convieneint as it is located very close to other bars, restaurants, grocery store and liquor store.

Just returned on Monday the 14th after a long weekend at Grand Plaza Hotel. The rooms were very clean and the view from the balcony of our room was fantastic! Bathroom was small but very clean. Grounds were kept nicely. The temperature was unbelieveable - mid 80's everyday could not believe it was January. The pool and beach were pristine. No complaints here, actually we are returning the end of February and again staying at Grand Plaza.
