Went for dinner at the Sea Porch while staying at the Don CeSar. The restaurant also serves breakfast, lunch, and room service for the hotel. You can sit inside or outside near the pool. We chose inside. It was about 6 pm and there was only one other table occupied in the dining room at the time.
Our server greeted us promptly and explained the only special, which was a grilled shrimp with watermelon gazpacho. We ordered a bottle of wine and reviewed the menu. He returned promptly with our wine. We were ready to order so my wife ordered the caramelized sea scallops in citrus buerre blanc and I order the shrimp/gazpacho special and the wild roasted salmon. He returned with a bread basket and I must recommend the kalamata olive rolls. They were very good.
The food didn't take too long, especially considering the lack of patrons. My wife loved her scallops. I tasted them and the sauce, both of which were very, very good. My salmon was a touch over cooked but still tasty. It had a pineapple, strawberry, jalapeno salsa on top and rice on the bottom. Overall not bad but the salmon could have been cooked a couple of minutes or so less.
Here's the bewildering part. Our waiter seemed to be displaced from the Maritana Grille - the high end restaurant on the property. He was attired in dress slacks and shirt and his demeanor and level of service was something you'd expect in a 5 start establishment. Other servers in the dining room were in shorts and sneakers. As our meal progressed, the tables started to fill and in listening to some of the other servers, they didn't seem to have the good attitude ours did.
When we were waiting for our wine to be delivered, a gentleman stopped by our table thanking us for dining with them and struck up a very short but pleasant conversation and ended by wishing us a good dining experience. Very nice. While were were eating, another gentlemen came by, dress shirt, dress pants, and a very large key chain hanging off his belt, came by to ask us about our dinner and if everything was to our liking. I could read his name badge so I didn't know what his function was in the restaurant. I saw him a couple more times during the evening walking around outside with the maintenance staff. The whole staff thing seemed a bit odd. The other issue was that even though the dining room was a bit off the main drag, many people walking from the pool, beach, or bar would cut through the dining room. Another oddity of the experience, hence my "bewildering" assessment.
While the food was good, I thought it was overpriced. As I said, we had good service but the wait staff overall was strange. I may come back for breakfast if I was to stay there again, but I'd never go as a destination restaurant.
