“My idea of a beach!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2012

Despite waiting for the last minute to make spring break travel plans, I managed to nab one night of camping at St George Island State Park. As soon as crossed over, I knew that this was going to be a great place for us. The beach was lovely - we even saw dolphins swim by. The facilities at the beach and campground were spotless. Our campsite was shaded, private and comfortable. I would definitely go back and camp again; I look forward to exploring more of the trails and beaches too.

This barrier island between Apalachicola Bay and the Gulf of Mexico is a true gem. Only $6 per car to enter, we drove to the very end which is the "Sugar Hill Beach Area". Parked the car and went on the beach. No crowds, a few fisherman, and lots of sea birds. Started walking toward the east end (five miles are only accessible by foot) and it wasn't all to long, we were all alone.
The water was a warm 81 deg. so a little dip now and then was just great. Collected lots of shells and on the way back, cut accross the dunes and walked part of the nature trail pased marsh island. Once back at the car we took advantage of the shelter there to take a shower, then enjoyed a picnic at one of the several tables provide, and enjoyed the view across the Gulf. Overall this is one of the most picturesque state parks with plenty of sandy coves, salt marshes, even tall pines and nine miles of undeveloped beaches and dunes. Hated to leave, but then all good things, unfortunately, must come to an end.

Room Tip: For those that like camping, the island offers full-facility campgrounds and there also is a youth c...

St George Island State Park has the most fantastic camping anyone could ask for

Describe your camping trip:

Secluded with nice sites and bathhouses.
Pros: The location. It was on far end of the island with plenty of beach area. In October when I was there, I had the beaches all to myself.

Cons: Bad skeeters. take plenty of spray.
Nearby attractions: Good restaurants on and near the island with plenty of fresh seafood.
Further comments: Everything was great aside from the skeeters.
