“Great location and service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2011

This hotel is such a nice location - right in the main downtown area of St. Augustine. Everything was easily accessible. The rooms were spacious, clean and beautiful. The downstairs bar was also really nice as were all of the staff. We would definitely return.

My husband and I are local to Florida. Our family visited in mid August so we decided to treat them to a weekend in St Augustine. We are Platinum members. So our expectations at a Marriott hotel are high. First I have to say the staff great. The decor filled with antiques. Which we like. But once you enter your room...you expect a bed to be plush..the bathroom to be clean. No on both counts. The shower had a line of black mold on the bottom of the shower door. The coffee pot was broke. And the bed was not what you would expect. We expected the type of bed as the Key West Marriott or Key Largo. The room looked worn and did the hallways.

The food, which we just had appetizers, were good. The lounge music was tops.

We stayed in room 316.

Room Tip: Watch out for room 316 the shower is moldy

Great hotel, awesome staff. Perfect weekend getaways, I just wish we were told ahead of time the pool was closed both days because of weddings. That was a real bummer considering we wanted to cool off in the late afternoon after a full day out in the town. That was truly the only disappointment ...the restaurant , the hotel, the location, the service was all awesome...

To say the least we were disappointed with this hotel. Based on the online reviews, a $249/nt rate and the fact that it is part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection we expected a “luxury” hotel. What we found was a musty old hotel in need of basic maintenance and a new mattress.

The location of the hotel is excellent and the exterior sets you up for a grand experience, right up until the smell of urine greets you at the front entrance stairway. We were not sure if it was from the horses that we saw pulling carriages by the entrance or the homeless men sleeping in the park across the street. Either way, it was a bit too “urban mission” for me.

I love history so antiques and older hotels/homes are right up my alley. However, I expect an upscale hotel of any age to not smell like mildew nor have a moldy shower curtain, worn out mattress and wall mounted facial mirror dangling out of the wall.

We had asked for a high level room in hopes of reducing any street noise, but apparently they were at capacity so we had a 2nd level room. This is actually the same level as the outdoor pool so we were kept up at night by laughing pool guests dragging chairs across the pool deck and playing in the hot tub – one night I finally called to complain at 2:00 AM. NOTE: The pool area is very pretty, but the pool is tiny and only 3.5 feet deep!

We were there over the 3 day Labor Day weekend and our “holiday package” was supposed to include breakfast for 2 each morning. When we arrived I asked if we needed vouchers for breakfast and was told “No. We should just go the café (not the real restaurant) and the ticket would be taken care of.” We were given no price limits, etc… so we ate a reasonable breakfast for 2 days only to see the charges on our bill at checkout. When I called downstairs they first said that I had not booked the package so they would not take it off of the bill. I explained that I had it in writing and that I would be bringing it down with me to check out and they actually continued to argue the point until I said that I would be writing about our stay on Trip Advisor when I got home. Only then did they decide to take it off the bill. They did offer us breakfast vouchers for the 3rd morning, but we were just tired of the place and ready to be gone.

The staff at the hotel was very nice, but things were VERY CONFUSED throughout our stay. On the 2nd night we were there, a wedding reception was being held around the pool (the ONLY pool) and we were told that the pool was closed to hotel guests. As you might imagine, I expected that for $249 per night we would be able to use the listed amenities. Interestingly enough, I later spoke with a different staff member who said that the bridal party was aware that the pool was to remain open to hotel guests and was available for use during the party.

The only place where the staff was not very nice is in the Café Cordova. I think that the café may be actually be run by a 3rd party and their staff was simply not trained along with the main hotel staff. The attitude is completely different when you walk through that door.

Room Tip: Ask to face away from the pool - it is loud!

Loved, loved loved the Casa Monica Hotel! The hotel is a stately building that is conveniently located in the historical district of St. Augustine and an easy walk to all the quaint shops downtown. From the moment you walk into the lobby, the ambiance and charm of this hotel beckons you to want to stay another night. Our room was newly updated and nicely furnished. The bed and mattress was very comfortable. We upgraded to a premium room which included a small sitting area,( well worth the cost). Great view from our window of a park across the street. Bathroom was very nice with a large shower. The hotel is decorated with original artwork that is for sale and very enjoyable to admire. Nice restaurant both for breakfast and dinner. Highly recommend this experience.

En route to another location we decided to stay in Saint Augustine for a night. My wife stays almost exclusively at Marriott properties for work so we splurged the 30,000 points on the Casa Monica. Well worth it!
The valet was very friendly and accommodating. He asked us twice if we were sure we had everything and we assured him we did. Of course once in the room we realized we forgot our camera. He was happy to help us retrieve it. Front desk was friendly without being too formal. No excessive use of sir or ma'am, as in other luxury properties. This suits my personality/age just fine. We were a little disappointed that the concierge lounge was closed on a Friday, but it's understandable. Our room (528, I think) was beautiful and had a great view of the park and Flagler College. The furnishings were upscale and the bed, as in all Marriotts, was extremely comfortable. The Bose system is definitely a nice touch! Our complimentary fruit and pretzels (due to my wife's rewards status) was fresh and hit the spot as an afternoon snack. The bathroom had a couple of issues, but not serious enough to merit a call to the front desk when only staying one night: The fan did not work, the screws on the toilet seat were seriously rusted, and the tile in the shower was cracked due to poor workmanship. I can't fault them on the tile issue as I know all too well how hard it is to get good contractors or subs in Florida.

This is a beautiful hotel in a spectacular St. Augustine location. Although it is a Marriott, it has a more boutique rather than corporate feel to it and is well worth the splurge.
