My wife and I booked a stay at the St. George Inn for one weekend to attend a wedding in St. Augustine. After reading the reviews I ensured my wife this was going to be a great place to spend the night between our cruise we were returning from and the wedding we were going to attend.
Upon arrival we learned I had booked a reservation for the following weekend instead of the current weekend (oops!) but we were informed the same room was still vacant so we switched our reservation to the correct date. During this process my wife received the impression that we were bothering the man at the desk. After trying to start pleasant small talk with the man she gave up and went to our room while I parked the car (parking was in a rather convenient parking garage about 2 blocks away which was nice considering how hard parking is to find).
Upon entering our room we found it incredibly hot and stuffy. Perhaps they only turn on the A/C when they know they have guests? Either way it took more than 4 hours for the room to become comfortable because it was cooled by 2 window type A/C units, one of which hummed loudly enough to make me get a headache. While the room cooled to a reasonable level it never reached a level which could be considered cool. We eventually left the room to explore the city. This was easy because the Inn is located so closely to the "historic" district.
We came back after dinner to discover that ice wasn't available after 8 p.m., pretty disappointing, guess we should have read the book when we got there. At least there was free internet which worked almost the entire time. After a ghost tour (which was pretty disappointing, the one given by "The Sheriff" looks to be the better option) we came back to find the A/C unit making loud shuttering noises again. We eventually turned one of them off so we could sleep.
In the AM the man at the desk was friendlier than the day before. As were we checking out another man was checking into (it appears they allow early check in if possible, which is a +) our room and was told it would be ready in 15 minutes. Not sure if you can properly clean a room in 15 minutes, but the room was clean when we checked in the previous day so they might be pretty good at that.
Overall I'd say it was a decent place to stay, but after dropping $180+ for one night in the cheapest room (one without a balcony) I'd say you could certainly find a better value for your money than the St. George Inn.
