“Love the theme, but needs a good cleaning”

Pirate Haus Inn

While we enjoyed our stay at Pirate Haus Inn, we marked it a 3 for cleanliness. There were tiny ants throughout the room, and I awoke to a huge roach crawling on the headboard just above my head. Another thing to add is that I was unwilling to touch the alarm clock until I thoroughly cleaned it with Clorox wipes, it appeared to never have been wiped down. The floor around the beds also were due for a good cleaning, being painted wood it hid some of the dirt, but a quick wipe turned the wipe black, ick. On a positive note, my kids loved it, especially the maps in our room, and the toys in the playroom. The location was great, just off St. George Street near the cathedral, giving easy access to the entire historic district. The atmosphere was well done and carried throughout. The artwork on the walls was nicely done, and added to the feel of the whole place.

My apologies that your stay was not better. I don't think there is a lot we can do about the sugar ants. I've been trying different chemicals but it works for a day or two then they are back. What works best is to seal every crack where they can come in, but with a building built in 1915, that is nigh impossible (the windows with the counterweights don't fit nearly so well in their tracks as modern windows do). Roaches on the other hand is something we can try to combat, however I am leery of spraying the same poison in a room month after month i wish you had mentioned it while you were here though. Again, sorry it did not live up to your expectations.

Where to start! The whole experience was great. Being a single mom I was a little reluctant to take my son to a hostel by my self on our last trip to St. Augustine. My ex was coming with us this time so I thought why not give it a try. I am glad we did. We all had a great time. St Augustine is such a great place and the location of the Pirate Haus was perfect for walking around town. I loved the fact that there were no TVs and no Phones in the room. In fact I even left my cell phone in the car for the first two days. Just family time. The living room was wonderful as well. You could get computer time, watch TV, and my son played with the grand pirate toys. The staff was very nice and helpful. The Kitchen was very well kept and the pirate pancakes were as fun to look at as they were to eat. We met some guests along the way that made the stay fun as well. It was kinda like staying at home….just better and in St Augustine. Thanks to Conrad for the great place to stay.

Thanks for your very positive review. I've often thought about changing the name from Inn to Homestay because I feel it best represents what we're about. Ideally I'd like to have wine & cheese with all the guests, but I'd have to raise rates to do it. So instead we often have impromptu gatherings which can be loads of fun. And the Pirate toys and bedtime reading are always favorites with kids! Thanks for your patronage!

My husband and I have been visiting the Pirate Haus every year for the last four years. St. Augustine is our end-of-summer tradition trip and we would never stay anywhere else but the Pirate Haus. It was the first stop on our ten-day honeymoon Florida trip. Conrad even congratulated us with two ice-cold beers upon our arrival! We have brought family here as well as planning our yearly trip this year with some dear friends! its spacious, clean, comfortable, AFFORDABLE!, close to the action, and all around a wonderful place we hope to visit routinely!

“We love the Pirate Haus”

Pirate Haus Inn

May 21, 2008

This is my second time staying at the Pirate Haus (my brother's third time) and we are never disappointed. This is the best value in St. Augustine. It is clean, everyone is nice, and it is right in the middle of the historic area so we could walk everywhere. We stayed in the pirate room which was bigger than rooms in many hotels i've stayed in. I travel a lot and I usually make sure I stay in a big chain hotel because if it is the right chain, it is almost guaranteed to be nice. I have found in the past few years that is not always true. With rising prices and declining conditions, the last several trips I have taken I have stayed off the beaten path in places like the Pirate Haus. I love it! It has so much more character and provides a much better city experience than staying in a rundown hotel. Conrad is always great and we always meet other travelers in the common room. I have already recommended this place to several friends!

Thank you for you positive review. With big chain hotels it's usually hard to keep on top of employees to maintain standards. The fewer rooms the easier it is to do, then again our building dates to 1915 so that makes it a bit of a struggle sometimes, as anyone who owns an older building will affirm.

But compliments such as yours keep my going by letting me know i'm on the right track. Thanks again for your patronage.

Pirate Haus was a fantastic place to stay in St. Augustine! It's in a great location, a short walk from restaurants, shops, and the water. The roof deck is tons of fun, the rooms were immaculate and well air-conditioned during our June visit. Each room has a different pirate theme which adds extra fun to a weekend trip. We were in the "ship" room.

I was very pleased with this hostel!
