“Not What I Expected”

Pirate Haus Inn

Apr 15, 2008

Let me start by saying that I was really looking forward to my stay at the Pirate Haus. After reading all of the glowing reviews, I fully expected to be thrilled with my stay. I have stayed at many Hostil type facilities in the past and I am very much used to this type of atmosphere. Upon arrival at the Pirate Haus we were quite pleased with the nice young man who greeted us and our room was pretty clean and comfortable. After day one we were still waiting for this glowing personality in Conrad which I had read so much about, however we did NOT see this same person. We found him to be somewhat rude and not very friendly. We really enjoyed interacting with the other guests though, which makes this type of place worth the stay! The common areas of this Hostil we found to be quite disgusting and the ammenities that were offered on the side (ie: bike rental, use of roof top grill, etc.) were not as readily available as stated. Overall I would give this place a C and I would not stay here again. However, the location was perfect.

I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay, but I do expect a little consideration on the part of my guests:

1. I had a sign on the patio door which stated "Patio Closed due to High Winds", the reason for this is that the door catches the wind and repeatedly slams shut thereby damaging both the door and the frame. Your group constantly violated this simple request.

2. You came into the kitchen while breakfast was still going on and proceeded to blend drinks in the blender thus disturbing other guests who were in the middle of a conversation.

As for common areas being 'disgusting'. I think not, however there is no other lodging in town which allows guests to use their kitchen facilities at any time of day (as you yourself made use of). We can't be there to clean up after every mess at any time of day. Had it been not up to par while you were here, you had but to bring it or anything else to my attention.

Bicycle rental. One is in the shop, so I only have one other available to rent. I simply do not have enough storage space to have more, though I wish I did.

In closing, I would like to apologize to you for any inconvenience incurred. Our amenities, decor, location, and staff can measure up to the best full-service accommodations in the area. Thank you for the positive points of your review! Any negativity makes us only work harder to please.

Thanks also to all our other guests who have written the positive reviews that keep us at the top of Tripadvisor!

You'll likely love this property if you have a sense of fun and sociability. I used the Pirate Haus Inn as a comfortable stopover for my return to New England via an early morning Skybus flight. It is located conveniently downtown in the heart of the old city and provides all the comforts of home.

You should not have expectations of a hotel as this is purely a cozy hostel that provides the warmth of social interaction with fellow guests and hosts. There is a rooftop patio, shared kitchen and living room area with large flat screen tv and computer with internet access. It's up to you to cook your own food but there is the opportunity to enjoy all you can eat pancakes prepared by your able hosts each morning. There are a number of private rooms and one co-ed room (which I shared with 3 other men) and a womens dorm room too. All are clean and comfortable despite not being lavish... obviously, I don't need posh! There is nothing to complain about but you must be able to climb a flight of stairs as this property is located on the second floor without an elevator (it's an old building in a very old city!) The location is right in the heart of the city, only a half block from the pedestrian only St. George Street, so definitely a major plus for those wishing to be within walking/stumbling distance of their domicile.

I thoroughly enjoyed meeting the myriad of guests that usually tend to be world travelers or Lonely Planet types. Definitely check out the world map posted with pins showing the hometowns of past guests. As for me, I'll definitely continue to support this amazing property with the incredible value it provides to all guests caring to enjoy the lovely city of St. Augustine. I just loved hearing the bells from the nearby church ringing while the morning sun rose over the adjacent bay.

“Arrrr, it's grrrrreat!”

Pirate Haus Inn

Mar 25, 2008

My friends and I stayed at the Pirate Haus Inn in February 2008, and it couldn't be beat for the price, location and friendliness. The room was clean, the beds comfortable and Capt. Conrad a great resource for town information. There were even computers for the guests to use! It was wonderful to be right in the middle of everything we wanted to see and be just a block from the pedestrian shopping/dining street. If you're looking for fancy and luxury, this isn't for you. But if you're looking for a funky, clean, well-situated place at a great price, it can't be beat. If I'm in St. Augustine again, I'll definitely want to stay here.

This place RULES! I was initially just looking for a place to crash with my wife and 2 kids that wouldn't break the bank. When I found the Pirate Haus website, I knew my 7 & 10 year old sons would like it, but was not sure about my wife. I think she had the most fun! The room was a total hoot, and nicely presented. Very clean! The pirate pancakes were one of the best meals we had in a week in Florida. We were a little concerned because we were arriving late, but Captain Conrad was happy to wait-up for us and make sure we were settled in. With or without kids, this place is a real find. We loved St. Augustine and are already planning a return trip, and there is no question that it will include a stay at The Pirate Haus!

Thanks for the kind words. I find that often people are a bit hesitant to try something different (I think you'd agree....we're different!) but are quite pleased in the end that they stayed with us. Thanks for posting the pictures too!

Arrrrrrr-guably the best deal in St. Augustine. It truly has a (peg) leg up on the competition. Inexpensive (pi)rates! We had a (cannon) ball. This inn is a real treasure.

For real: the value is incredible, perhaps unbeatable. The Pirate Haus Inn has a homey and welcoming atmosphere for everyone from lone travelers to families to moderately large groups of friends. The private rooms are a steal at about $70; our two rooms each had 5 beds (4 bunk beds and 1 double bed). Free services galore: there's a television, wi-fi, a communal kitchen, free pancakes each morning, and plenty of maps and menus for local restaurants. And, the Pirate Haus is in a great location, just a 30 second walk from the restaurant/shop area of St. Georges Street, and mere minutes from various other points of interest. We will be coming back!
