“Kind of like a "cleaner" Duval St. in Key West”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 24, 2011

If Saint Augustine neighborhoods resemble Key West somewhat, then St. George Street is kind of "cleaner" Duval Street. A prime tourist walk, the street are lined with shops and restaurants. Some of those are quite good and some more commercial and cheesy.

I would definitely take some time to see it, but, what I wouldn't do is drive here. Either stay at a local bed and breakfast--many look beautiful and are just a block or two away from the area or get public transportation (shuttle, taxi, etc.). During tourist season, there is little parking and traffic can be congested and frustrating. If you walk, you will enjoy yourself.

“A bit touristy, but still fun”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 24, 2011

I was suprised that we didn't actually buy anything in the stores, but we still enjoyed taking a stroll down the street in the evening before and after dinner.

“Not getting better”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2011

We live apx 40 miles from St Augustine and have been many times. St George street is the "strip" of the tourist district. St George street doesn't allow vehicles, but the side streets do, and they cross through St George street in at least one intersection. It can be a pleasant 30 minute one way stroll if not too crowded, but we have not been very impressed as we have gotten older.

The good: candy shops, leisure place to people watch IF not to crowded, a lot of resturants from all price ranges(finding them in all the nooks and turns is not always easy), easy walking access to the Fort(5 min's), easy access to the carriage rides if your into that. Nice Welcome Center with city info a small gift shop and bathrooms. the fort has large grounds for picnics, frisbee, etc.

The bad: homeless have been a problem forever, they need security more than ever, some stores and resturants are crummy, touristy more than historic, $10 parking at the information/welcome center(its nice, but it should be for $10), more bathrooms than ever, but not alot., shops not really open at night, if your a first timer it would take hours to walk all the side streets and get a good grasp of all the shops and resturants.

If your in St. Augustine you will be on St George street and it can be Ok at times. I wouldn't drive 10 hours to just visit the heart of this historic city.

“Shop! Shop! Shop!”

Great place to shop and tour! In the heart of St. Augustine. This is the heart of the city! Make sure you stop at "Earthbound" for some fun unusual gifts!

“Great Historic Vibe”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2011

St. George is a great place for a stroll. I'm not a big shopper but we did buy some small things in the area of St. George's Street. Its difficult to find a "cheap eat" here however. So families may have a hard time with the prices. However, this is a picturesque place that has a unique St. Augustine vibe so don't pass it up and don't hurry! ALSO unlike Savannah, Georgia, there are plenty of public restrooms or shopkeepers that will help you find a restroom. I also liked the street musicians and the lack of panhandlers. This is a very good outing for a family while in the area.
