I have brought groups to River Lodge on a number of occasions, as well as staying there myself. I travel in Jamaica for a living, and can easily say that a visit to River Lodge is the truly authentic Jamaican experience that so many travelers are looking for. The lodge is built from an old Spanish Fort, right in the rainforest of St. Mary. You can hear the sea at night from your room, with a natural spring also running through the property. The rooms are well kept and clean, and the food is excellent - inexpensive and tasty Jamaican cuisine.
The staff at River Lodge are a highlight of a stay; friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable about the local area. River Lodge is located on a dead end road along the sea. The road literally turns into a old donkey trail a mile or so past the lodge, with some of the best hiking to be found on the island. This unique remoteness helps to creates a calm and quiet that sets it apart from so many other guesthouses across Jamaica (a notoriously noisy country!). River Lodge has managed to capture and preserve a piece of Jamaica that is all but impossible for the traveler to find elsewhere on the island - a rural, quiet, safe, and authentic Jamaican experience for those looking to escape the hustle of the resorts.
The property is perfect for groups, with excellent cooks, ample seating to eat meals together, as well as workshop spaces, and even a secluded yoga pavilion/meeting area. In addition, a variety of excursions are available right from your doorstep, including some stunning hikes with the local Rasta guides. Literally some of the best hiking you will find, with old ruins, waterfalls, and stunning beaches around every bend. River Lodge is really one of a kind, and has provided my groups and myself an amazing and unforgettable travel experience.
