“Next time ... Hold the Chips !!”
Living in Punta Gorda, residents do not lack for restaurants to choose from. There are eating establishments in town that are as good as you can find, serving food as good as it gets with Wait Staff to match, all in a waterfront atmosphere that is conducive to a relaxed night out for good food and grog.
The Ice House Restaurant is located in a restored Historic brick building originally used to warehouse Ice for the long Summer weather at the turn of the century. Today, it has a phenomenal selection of bottled and draft beers of all types and kinds to satisfy all tastes and palates, all set in an environment that is First Class. The food, however, needs to be brought up to the level of the surroundings and its selection of beer.
Granted, I only had the classic American, "on the run," 1/2 lb. Cheese Burger with fries, and my partner had the restaurant's signature meal of "Fish & Chips." The short side on both plates were the "chips" or French Fries. Instead of being served fresh, hand cut fries made daily from real potatoes, or the proper English "Chips," we were served commercial grade, previously frozen "fat fries" with little taste of potato, as one would expect from such an "easy out" commercial kitchen food product in a lesser establishment.
Living in Charlotte County, in SW Florida, and having the Gulf of Mexico and Charlotte Harbor a stones throw away from the restaurant, you would expect to find fresh, locally caught fish on any menu and be able to order it in most "upscale" establishments especially when ordering the signature dinner of Fish & Chips at this wonderfully appointed and tastefully decorated Ice House Restaurant .. Wrong ! What you will get is a large piece of previously frozen white fish, lightly battered and deep fried to perfection, that is more than likely a fillet from a fish harvested in a fish farm, probably from another continent.
The wait staff were top notch, being attentive to our needs without being intrusive.
Each of our meals were nicely presented and cooked well, each meal looked good. But, the white fish was just as tasteless as the pre-manufactured "chips" or French fries that came with it. My half pound blue cheese burger was delicious .. It was cooked as ordered, it was larger than the fresh bun on which it sat, and I enjoyed every bite ... But the next time, "Hold the chips !"
