“Club Med - what a blast!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2012

We just returned from the Sandpiper Club Med. The Club's renovation is great. The rooms are much better. The pools and physical plant is modern serving the club's populations more efficiently. The food is greatly improved. Many choices with most food made to order.
One disappointment is the coffee and house wine. It's horrible. It's a surprise since Club Med is French. You can pay for better wine and there's an espresso machine in the bar but hopefully they will upgrade both these items soon.
The tennis and golf academies are wonderful. Watching the young talented players train is great fun.

Although Heather Golnick is no longer directing the Triathlon Training Camp at Club Med Sandpiper Bay, the new head of the triathlon camp, Tommy Allore, was excellent. I signed up for a three-day triathlon camp as part of my week-long vacation at Club Med Sandipiper Bay, which I spent with my family. The camp is very flexible, and for the $210/day cost, you get about 3 - 3.5 hours of private training each day, personalized to your level and needs. Here is a snapshot of my 3-day training camp (which was actually spread out over 4 days to accommodate scheduling needs):

Day 1:
- Morning: 2 hour workout in the swimming pool with video-taping of stroke mechanics and evaluation

Day 2:
- Morning: 1.5 hour open-water swim starting from the Club Med beach
- Afternoon: 1 hour run-interval workout with evaluation of run mechanics (5 miles); 30 minutes of strength training and conditioning exercises in the fitness center

Day 3:
- Morning: 1.5 hour bike ride from Club Med to Jensen Beach and back
- Afternoon: 1 hour of review, mental preparation and visualization exercises

Day 4:
- Morning: 3 hour mock Olympic Triathlon (1500 m open-water swim, 25 mile bike, 6.2 mile run); I recorded my personal best of 2 hours 36 minutes (thanks Tommy!)

Tommy provided detailed and excellent evaluations during each training session, especially the swim. He took detailed notes during my swim-stroke evaluation and e-mailed them to me. All the distance workouts were recorded on his GPS and downloaded to websites that he e-mailed to me.

Initially, I was a bit wary of the $210/day cost, but after doing the camp, I felt it was definitely worth the money and would highly recommend this triathlon camp to any triathlete looking for an opportunity to train while staying at Club Med Sandpiper Bay. Tommy was great, and he shared some valuable insights as an elite triathlete that I think will really improve my conditioning and performance. As a bonus, the food and accommodations at this Club Med are excellent! I thoroughly enjoyed the triathlon camp and my entire vacation (as did my family).

We just returned today from Club Med Sandpiper Bay, and had a great time with the family. There were 19 of us. They made us feel right at home. We got to know a whole lot of the staff, and they were great. Lionel was fantastic, along with Guiermo at the dock, and Brian at volleyball, and of course, Eleni was wonderful with the babies. The girl, Joyce, with the beverage cart at the adult pool needed at attitude adjustment though. She got mad when the people playing volleyball wanted drinks, when she passed by....Out of her way, I guess..Besides her, everyone was friendly and nice..There are only two things wrong with this resort..No free Wi-Fi at an all inclusive, and no alcohol, at the all adult pool...WHY??? Every hotel we stay at has free internet service...Why not this one?We had several celebrations at dinner time with special cakes made for us...Wonderful...I just wish they had maybe some movies offered in the theater at night after the 8:15 entertainment, instead of hanging out at Slice every night. They should have adult poker night too. Not for kids..Or card night with tables set up for adults...Just some suggestions...More variety for nightlife....Other than that, it was a great week..Weather was perfect....They don't need to run the leaf blower at 7:30 in the morning, when people are trying to sleep...

Room Tip: We were in building D. It was the furthest away, but quiet. We were on the second floor. It's cl...

We have recently returned from our second holiday at Club Med Sandpiper Bay. Our whole family loved it so much that we have already booked to return again next year.

We have a a five year old daughter and two year old twin boys, so the quality of the children's clubs is very important to us. The programs for children of those ages are superb - our boys loved the "Petit Club" and the "GOs", especially Luna, Norma and Jessie, are fun, friendly and kind towards the young children.

I was astonished at the criticism of the mini club in some previous posts. Our daughter loved it and by the second week was asking to stay on when we came to collect her in early afternoon. The children's day is broken into sections of about 45 minutes to an hour where they do all sorts of different activities. They are never bored. Our daughter particularly enjoyed the trapeze class which she had every morning - special thanks to Emily for her patience and enthusiasm in teaching her.

Twice a week the mini club were involved in a show put on for the parents. Kara the choreographer / dance instructor worked extremely hard and put on shows that were amazing given the ages of the participants. Our daughter loved her and the shows were a real highlight of the holiday for our children.

The sporting facilities for adults are also excellent. We attended beginner classes at the tennis academy every morning - these were a lot if fun - as well as playing golf, soccer, trapeze etc. The adult pool is now heated and Justine from the bar, always cheerful and helpful, serves soft drinks there every day. As an aside, although there is an open bar, most guests are far too busy taking part to drink during the day to any great extent - the suggestion in a previous review that guests sit around drinking heavily does not square with my own experience.

The best thing about Club Med Sandpiper Bay is the friendly and fun atmosphere. That is in no small part down to Lionel and his team of GOs. Many of those we met on our last trip were still there and a number of them, especially Dan, Camille, Narish, Kyle, Larissa, Teddy and Rachel, have become our friends. This holiday, one or two others, especially Rosie, whose singing is fabulous and Jeff, whose energy and enthusiasm really made the daily 4.15 family events, were also a lot of fun.

We only have one or two very minor quibbles:

The ubiquitous Bulgarian wine is pretty dreadful - although better wine is available at a price it would be nice if the quality could be improved a little. In the Marketplace restaurant, the wine dispenser is not too user friendly.

Soleil restaurant is great, and the staff very helpful, but the choice there is very limited. It would be nice if some more of the choices available in the marketplace restaurant were also on offer at Soleil.

Once or twice a week a fantastic fruit platter was available in the Marketplace - it would be great if it was available every day.

It would assist families like us with lots of small children if there were towels available at the splash pool.

These are trivial gripes about a fabulous family resort. We all loved it, and our children were so excited tonight when I told them we were going back next year.

Definitely recommended for single parents--you actually feel like you get a vacation! A return to Club Med Sandpiper after a several-year break; improvements were nice. Food was far better than a few years ago: tons of healthy choices and seafood, although vegetarian options were great some nights and boring others. Exercise classes are GREAT. Flexibility of children's program (drop child in and pick up whenever) was wonderful, although my 6-yr-old didn't love it as much as I'd anticipated and I'm not sure why. We got some time alone (mom, especially), tried some new things together (paddle boarding, trapeze, circus, new foods), and felt very comfortable as a family of two. The place was at max capacity, but we could barely tell. My two recommendations for resort are 1) open childcare in time for yoga and 2) fix patio lights so they can be turned on while interior lights are off (so parents can relax on the porch after kids have gone to bed).

Room Tip: Room near entrance & center of resort was easy to access &, surprisingly, quiet for early be...

We must give a shout out to GO's Eric, Kel, Kat and Cory! They went out of their way to make sure their guests had an awesome experience at ClubMed and they were awesome with our kids giving them extra attention! Happy kids equals happy parents! Steven tending bar is awesome and is the kind of happy go lucky bartender you want at a resort! These five set a high standard and it would be especially great if all the GO's and employees shared in their can do spirit, but unfortunately there were some disappointing moments. Overall though the experience is great and we would happily go back. Village manager Lionel does a great job rounding the village on a daily basis and seems to genuinely care about his guests. We were sad to see this vacation come to an end!!
