“Gorgeous property”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2008

Beautiful room with kitchenette and ocean view from the balcony, two pools, right on the beach. Restaurant was just okay. We got this room through a package on Expedia and were thrilled.

Beachcomber Resort in POMPANO (not Ft. Lauderdale!!) Beach has a terrific beach and the grounds are quite beautiful. We had a 1 bedroom suite at ground level - you open your door and you are just steps from the pools and the beach/ocean - lovely! However - our suite had NOT been renovated AT ALL! Evidently they are part the way through a major renovation but our suite had not benefitted! It was clean but very very shabby and worn out - my guess it was last remodelled in the early 80's - not only is the decor very dated but it is also in a poor state of repair especially the kitchen and bathroom. However it was very spacious and sunny. Very strange that the kitchen had NO utensils, china or flatware - NOTHING which is extremely unusual and frankly unacceptable - we had to go out and buy paper plates/cups, plastic flatware etc. The TV was rather old and the reception was poor - had cable but very few channels. NO INTERNET service. So the suite itself was a MAJOR dissapointment. But we loved the grounds, the pools and the beach. The resort renovations have kind of been done 'on the cheap' - and a lot seems to have been overlooked like the railings badly need to be painted and there's a lot of formica everywhere. I dont think they are working towards being a luxury hotel - the new sign out front is cheesy looking - clearly a choice was made to get a new sign but to get a cheap looking one?! We went to the beach on a quiet weekday p.m. in late Oct. and they were completley out of towels! Said there would be no more for 30 mins! But didnt offer us a complimentary lounge chair or anything like that - just said 'oops - sorry'! That kind of thing is unacceptable too. Also - be aware that the hotel is not on Ft. Lauderdale Beach - it is on Pompano Beaach - its a nice location but not a premium location like Ft. Lauderdale - the website doesnt really make that clear at all - we're sorta local (this was a 'staycation'!) so we knew but out-of-towners may not realize. Also - the website only shows renovated rooms - many are NOT renovated! We probably won't go again - we enjoyed relaxing at the beach and pool but got depressed when we had to go back to our dingy suite!!

Stayed at this hotel Oct 2008.

**First the good**:

We had an oceanfront room (612) which had a great balcony with an excellent view

Room was clean

Good water pressure and hot water in the shower

Staff was pleasant

Reasonable breakfast at the hotel restaurant (they don't have the breakfast buffet open during low season, but for the price we got a lot of food).

**The not so good**:

Even though they have spent 3 million renovating this hotel, it is still very obvious that the structure is VERY OLD.

Some of the 'new' furniture already has signs of wear. Our headboard had a hole in it, plaster was falling off the corner of the wall, some of the sutters were broken.

The hallways are dark, narrow and hot.

Parking space was tight. Can't imagine what it is like in the high season.

**Bottom Line**:

We were there overnight for a wedding in the area and only needed a clean decent place to stay. This hotel served that purpose well with the plus of having the gorgeous balcony to relax pre and post party.

If we were there on vacation, we would have been dissapointed because it tries so hard to be a luxury hotel...but it is not. It's like an old woman with a facelift. She looks great for her age, but you can't deny that she is still old.

We stayed here for our first anniversary and had a wonderful time. The beach is beautiful and very private. The room overlooked the water with a huge balcony with 2 lounge chairs so that you can view the sunrise and the moon and the stars. Our room was spacious and very clean. The only thing that I didn't like was that there wasn't really any place that you can walk to, such as shops, cafes, clubs etc. You have to drive 20 min to Ft. Lauderdale, Los Olas Blvd for that. There is a restaurant/bar across the street that serves a good breakfast and looks like a place the locals hang out. There is also the resort restaurant that we didn't try even though it looked cute. also, if you walk down to the Pompano Beach pier, there are some shops and a couple of bars there. Overall, this is a great romantic get away and we would definitely return!

  • Liked — the balcony overlooking the water
  • Disliked — not a lot of shops, cafes etc. within walking distance

My fiance and I stayed two nights at this beautiful hotel, we were a little nervous at first, we read alot of reviews, some good and some bad, we were very impressed when we got there, our room was in exellent condition, we cant think of one single thing that was wrong, we had a wonderful time, we will definitely be staying here again in the near future, very soon, we had an oceanview room, we were overlooking the pool, but could see the ocean very well, we love this place.

Stayed for 3 nights in mid-September. Because it is "off" season, we got an ocean view room for just $70 a night; our room overlooked the pool but we were at the ocean end of the hallway so it was a beautiful view.

The room had a nice balcony with lounge chairs, a king size bed, and a very convenient refrigerator and microwave. The bathroom, closet and dresser were in an alcove inside the door and seperate from the main room. Everything was clean and was decorated in "tropical plantation" style.

Check in/out was smooth, and we had an inexpensive breakfast every morning at Stinger's right across the street. There is also a small grocer there where we stocked up on beer and snacks.

We spent our afternoons enjoying the pool and visited with friends in the evening.

The hotel website offers rates that are a couple bucks cheaper than hotels.com, etc. With the rate we paid, there was nothing to complain about.

Our trip dates: 8/18/08 to 8/21/08

First, the good:

Location, location, location! Right on the Best beach in the area. It's a clean and feels like a private beach. Very secluded.

Ok, so when we arrived in Florida at 11am I called the hotel to see if our room was ready yet. They said yes, which was great. When we arrived to check in we were told they put us in a jr. suite, we had booked an ocean front room.

When we walked into the room, (room 810, top left room from ocean) we were so impressed. Huge wall of windows looking out to the ocean, kitchenette with table, huge closet and good size bathroom with a bidet, that was cool.

The room had a HUGE king bed, for me it was excellent, for my partner it was too soft. The bed had a ton of pillows, like 10 decorative and 3 or 4 regular pillows. There was a nice desk, sofa, chair, ottoman, and TV chest with drawers and a safe.

We had the biggest balcony, it was a wrap around. AWESOME - definitely the best part of the room. The AC in the room worked great. Everything worked including the free wireless internet; we had a good to very good connection the whole time there.

Now for the not so great:

The hallways are hot, no AC. The elevators broke down once while we were there, people were stuck in them at the time, we took the stairs. Let's face it, the place is old. The tub looked dirty, so we bought cleaner and brushes to clean things further - like the tub, toilet, bidet and sink. You can not clean the old (looks dirty) out of the tub. But we felt better knowing it was “clean” after we scrubbed it. Don’t get me wrong, housekeeping does a good job, but remember this place is OLD. The room smelled a little old/stale/moldy, so we bought a few air fresheners to put around the room and that took care of it.

Also, on our first day there was little hot water - more lukewarm. Come to find out, you have to find the exact place to turn the faucet to - which took a long time! Once in the right spot, we had hot water.

Some of the staff could have been a little more professional. One day we came out and our rental car had a flat tire. We were there in the car waiting for 2 hours for AAA, different story there, about 10 employees had walked right by us with the flat tire in plain view and never asked if we needed help or anything. Not that that’s a big deal, but just and example of the unprofessionalism at this “resort.”

Parking is kind of bad also, if you come back to the hotel after 11PM good luck there was no parking in the lot, but luckily there is more parking across the street. It was just inconvenient.

Our bottom line:

For the $95 per night we got on there website, and the unexpected upgrade to the top suite, it was a GREAT deal. Any higher cost, or less of a room, and I think I would have a different opinion. Will I go back to this hotel? Well, yes and no. If I could get the same room for $95 then yes, anything else though and probably not.
