Just came in from lunch at a great little Mom & Pop Greek restaurant- the Greek Gyro Express- just a bit south of Sample Rd. on the west side of Federal , next to a light bulb store and an "Edible Arrangements" franchise. I had passed it often but assumed they just sold sandwiches. It is an inexpensive place with cloth tablecloths and starched white napkins and a varied menu even at lunch. A friend clued me in and I had a great meal of stuffed pepper and tomato ( one of each) with great tomato sauce accompanied by a side Greek salad that was the best I've ever had. Brought home a dessert I can't spell or pronounce- Starts with G -sort of a baklava filled with custard -. All that and a drink ran me $13. I'm glad a friend clued me in to the place. I am definitely going back for their lamb chops which are only $15 and I am told are delicious.
Husband and wife team- husband cooking and wife serving . I did see some diners with very generous looking gyros. It's certainly unpretentious. I live right near a well known Greek restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale and feel the Greek Salad here was much better. Couldn't find a website on line , but in searching found a review by the Food Editor of the local paper raving about the exact same meal I had -and also commenting that they have genuine Greek style yogurt drizzled with honey that she also loved. I can't imagine anything in this little place being bad!
There was a little televison in the corner playing a Greek TV station. I was there at an off time on a Saturday, but I'll bet it fills up with local expatriates at night- it has that kind of feel.
