My wife and I spent a week at The Sea Gardens in June and had a wonderful time. We traded a timeshare week at the last minute and got in. After reading some mixed reviews here, we prepared ourselves for the worst. We were very pleasantly surprised. If you are expecting a $300 a night high-end luxury resort, you WILL be let down. Our room was smallish (but not as small as the hotel’s own paperwork led us to believe). Everything was very clean and recently painted; the room’s décor was smart and modern (what I would expect to find in a Hampton Inn or Holiday Inn) and the staff was friendly and helpful. I lived in Florida for over 20 years and I know what to expect from a 'beach hotel' and Sea Gardens is truly what you would expect for the location and price range, nothing better, nothing worse.
There were some problems, a few light bulbs out, tiny ants swarmed any crumbs you left out, the bathtub was extremely small and chipped up, the TV was tiny (come-on who is really there to watch TV, there is a beach right outside!!!), we could hear our next door neighbors clear as a bell through the locked double-doors (they really liked some TV show at 9:30 am and laughed very loudly at it everyday), and most of the arcade’s games did not work (I suggest you think of it as gambling and the prize for your quarter is occasionally winning the right to play the game), but those things are soon forgotten when you walk the few steps to the beautiful nearby beach. There were a lot of families and the pools and hot tubs tended to be filled with kids most of the day, so do not expect an intimate B & B type romantic time. No, things were not perfect, but good enough for me to say Sea Gardens is 'above average' for this category of hotel.
As for nearby restaurants, do not miss Caps Place for an amazing experience and meal, Peking Duck House for way above average New York style Chinese food and Mulligans' for breakfast.
