Spur of the moment trip - got a great deal for 5 nights over Labor Day weekend! While Pompano Beach itself does not seem to have much to offer, this was a great home base for driving down the road to Fort Lauderdale (10-20 mins away).
We arrived on Friday the 29th. One thing I learned just prior to showing up was that the resort is valet parking only. I hadn't budgeted for it because I only found out about it after I had booked it (through reading these reviews). It was a good experience and we didn't mind the fee so much. You're billed $26.50 each day ($25 + some charge for $1.50). It was fun calling for the car when you needed it. They were always on top of things and would have your car ready in 5 mins. Have money budgeted for tipping these guys every time you take the car out and return it. Also - they don't charge you for the day you check out.
The room was an "ocean view" room. We could see the ocean but we were also facing the other tower since we were on the side. Not a big deal - we didn't care to pay the premium for an ocean front view of Pompano Beach (perhaps if it were somewhere more tropical / pretty blue water... but not this beach). Very comfortable for a smaller sized room with everything we needed. We couldn't figure out the AC until the last day - the control unit on the wall was behind a lamp shade and we never saw it until it was too late. It was a bit frosty for our liking! For those with sinus issues... I snored like crazy and drove my wife nuts! Very dry! I LOVED the shower! Very relaxing and I loved the hotel shampoo, body wash, etc.
Staff in the hotel are very friendly and as others have mentioned some make it a point to learn your name and address you by name. Great service. One night, we went down to the front desk to see if they sell ear plugs (I snore). Unfortunately, they don't sell them but the guy at the front desk offered to bring some from home the next day! We didn't take him up on his offer, but WOW! Everyone was very accommodating and wanted to go the extra mile to make you happy.
We had dinner at the resort the first night. Pretty good overall but expensive. There are many good places for less money in Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach. We never ate breakfast at the hotel but we'd have lunch most days at the pool which was manageable. It was a great opportunity to seek out new restaurants using TripAdvisor, Yelp, etc. There's a lot of budget money to be saved by going elsewhere.
The pools were great. It was a little busy on the weekend due to the holiday but we were very happy on Tuesday after the crowds had gone. Very relaxing. They had a volleyball net setup, water basketball hoops, a football to toss around, rafts, etc. There was another area nearby with corn hole and "big chess" setup. The pools and whirlpool were also handicap accessible which we thought was nice. They also had staff serving food and drinks around the pools (ask for a menu). Good selection of both cocktails (a good list and very tasty) and beers (domestics, imports, local craft brews, etc.).
The beach was somewhat of a letdown. We did not swim in the ocean because of how dark the water was. I attribute this to the extraordinary amount of sea grass that was always on the beach or floating in the water. There is nicer beach as you head into Fort Lauderdale for sure. Still, it's nice to stay right on the beach without the Fort Lauderdale location premium. The beach is very nice up until you get to the water and even then it's not bad. I just didn't care for all of the sea grass. They have chair and cabana rentals at the beach that can be charged to the room. The company is separate of the hotel but works with them to allow the bill to room option. Everything at the pool, restaurant, etc. is all bill to room as well without the option to pay in cash, etc. You can settle up in cash when you go to check out but everything is charged to the room beforehand. We paid $51 for a cabana and two beach chairs on one occasion. The guy who helped us was great and I wish we would have had cash on us to tip him! The hotel staff do not serve the beach area but it's a short walk back to the hotel and pool if you want to order anything. There are also some places that will deliver food to where the rental guys are setup.
All in all - good trip for a great price. Fort Lauderdale was a lot of fun and I'll be sure to post reviews of the places we ate. Enjoy!
