“Great seafood. Period.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2014

We hit Fish Shack at 3:30, since we had had no lunch. Thank goodness. Got an appetizer of fried oysters - a tad pricey, but extremely good, and lightly fried. Mom had fried combo with cod, clams and shrimp. Shared most - all was great, esp. the clams ! I had scallops, with fries and cole slaw. THE tenderest scallops I can ever remember eating, and not only was the breading light, the oil was obviously fresh, and it was tasty, tasty, tasty ! I've had some really crappy scallops over the years, and these were just killer.

Just the kind of "local dive" I love hitting. Maybe 5 tables, and 5 or bar stools. A crowd drinking (looked like "regulars") kept people from coming in and eating at the bar. Some other reviews say the line is long at meal time - I can believe it ! Waitress couldn't have been more helpful (running her butt off, handling all tables and the bar). Some have griped about the price, but I've seen much worse food at much, much higher prices.

I highly recommend you go to the Fish Shack off-peak, so you can be eating without people staring you down to get your seat. It was the great find of our trip to the Atlantic Coast.

“Great meal, fresh seafood, moderate prices and a surprise location!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2014

Thanks again, to TripAdvisor for a perfect suggestion for a new dining experience. We completely enjoyed the casual seafood dinner at the understated Fish Shack! It is presently rated # 3 out of over 250 restaurants in Pompano beach, only trailing behind a donut and ice cream shops! Menu is limited with a variety of fish, shrimp, and two daily specials. They keep the sides simple, too .. 4 items ...French fries, a tossed salad, cole slaw, or white rice. Highly recommend the beer battered onion rings, garlic butter shrimp ($12.95- included two sides), and lightly blackened grouper, ( $14.99 w/ two sides). There are also sandwiches, wraps, a couple soups, and then you can top it off with some home made Key Lime pie, for a true South Florida feast.
Everything was fresh, prepared perfectly and served by friendly, engaging staff.

NOTE: do not be put off by the location or little "hole in the wall" appearance. There is often a line for one of the 5 tables or 8 bar stools at the counter. They do a huge carry out business for those not wanting to wait. If you have a rainy or cloudy day, head there then. Fearing the outside wait, in wet weather, some stay away. Such was our good fortune tonight. They do not take reservations, but people, wait and wait for a seat here.
Enjoy...we sure did!

“Great Seafood! Hard to Find but Worth Looking For”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2014

My wife and I were staying in nearby Deerfield Beach and were looking to explore other eateries beyond Deerfield. We saw this one in TripAdvisor and gave it a shot. Very glad we did. Great Place! Wonderful, fresh seafood at very good prices! We shared the fried combo (shrimp, cod and clam strips) and a basket of fried mahi fingers. Everything was delicious. We've eaten in fancy seafood restaurants that didn't prepare fish as well as this. We would've returned but they are closed on Sundays and Mondays. Although we ordered fried fish, they also offered fish grilled and blackened and have a raw bar. I believe they also served items like chicken fingers and burgers. The place is small -- about the size of a two-car garage (seats 20), and décor is whimsical. Finding it is a bit of a trick: it's in a tiny hidden strip mall behind Route A1. So be sure to get out your GPS or a good map. You'll never find this place by accident. But do find it -- it's worth the effort for great seafood!.

“A taste of Keys dining in Pompano”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2014

If fresh fish is your thing in a real down home basic atmosphere, then you must try the Fish Shack. There is absolutely nothing fancy about it but the food is worth the wait to get a seat anywhere in this small store front restaurant. The food is delicious and staff is friendly and efficient. The cracked conch is my favorite. Dress down and prepared for a wait.

“THANK YOU TRIPADVISOR! (and fish shack!)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2014

We (my husband and I) are continually amazed by TripAdvisor. Who would search out a little place like this when there are all these ads in magazines and newspapers and the hoopla of being The Best of Something (Ft. Lauderdale in this case). We would! And even though we got lost, we found it and were totally amazed. It was like being in Key West not the crowded oceanfront or 1A... but the real thing: amazing fish, fantastic taste that stayed with us for hours. What a sandwich! Fresh Grouper fried up and served with great cole slaw. Best conch fritters I've had and very nice oysters indeed. This is a real gem and we'll be back.
