While in Key West this past week, some friends and I drove up to Knight Key for the Pigeon Key Visitor's Center boat tour. I have been researching family history and my grandfather is connected with the building of Flagler's Key West railway extension; this was a great tour to find out more information about it all.
The boat ride out to Pigeon Key was a pleasant ride and the Captain and first mate were very friendly in sharing facts and information. (Tip them well, they are great guys). Once on the key, the tour guide was very informative with lots of details about the camp that was there and the daily flow of life for the workers; she was delightful and quite helpful in answering questions.
While in the Visitor's Center, which is an original train car that was brought back to the Knight Key (lower Marathon and the eastern abutment for the Seven Mile Bridge). My sister, a friend who is also a history buff and I bought several books and found the whole experience terrific.
If you like history and the water and enjoy little known facts, you'll quite enjoy this trip.
