I really enjoy the history of old buildings and old structures so I thought it would be a neat idea to catch a boat to Pigeon Key and learn a little about the building of the Florida Keys Overseas Highway. I got way more than I bargained for.
The ticket booth is big red train car on Knights Key/Marathon. Thought that was pretty cool. Since we were on limited time I asked the ticket seller how long the tour was going to take. She told us about 20-30 mins and then we'd have time to walk around/swim/do whatever we want there. So, we planned to do the short turn and still have at least 45-60 mins to swim. We were grateful that we were able to buy the tickets with the resident admission price due to some paint work on the island (which did not affect us at all).
We boat ride was fun and not crowded. The views of the keys, ocean, and bridges were very pretty. We were told that a tour guy will meet us on the dock.
The tour went sour once the guide told us to take a seat in this circle of lawn chairs. And to me, sitting means not touring and wasting time. And he sat and talked for at least 15-20 mins. A little dealt with the bridge and a little dealt with a buildings and a little dealt with kids staying for a week (really), a little about what they were doing on the island, etc AND the detail about each was RIDICULOUS. And then he was ready to walk. By that point you can't just be rude, excuse yourself and leave and hope not to be seen by the guide again (you can't the island is SO small). So we stuck with the guide.
He went on and on about EVERYTHING. I do not care about the resident cat. I do not care about the homework that you are making the kids staying on the island do. I do not care about the trash that people on the island leave. I just wanted to learn a little about the highway history and maybe explore the island's museum a little. I swear, the guide went on and on about unimportant details and our group was clearly losing interest. He clearly had no skills at evaluating his audience. He was like that teacher that doesn't realize that his students are sleeping in class.
The tour lasted an HOUR and then we were finally free to explore the museum. And by that time we just didn't care anymore and just wanted to go outside. There was no longer any time to swim or really do much of anything. We just explored on our own little and then sat at the dock to just wait for our boat to take us away.
I did not hate this excursion though. I liked the boat ride. I liked the view from the old highway above Pigeon Key. I liked watching pelicans fly around the dock. That's why I give it a two.
