I live about 1 1/2 hours away from Pickens and we try to camp at least once a year at the beach. Shaded camp areas with pines and scrub oak trees. Most sites have water and electricity with small separate area for more primitive camping. Campground is closest to the sound side (which is better for the kids) but the Gulf of Mexico is in easy walking distance (5-10 min.) across the road. Small campground store available (next available store is a LONG way!) Husband goes fishing at the pier and along the shore at the point (where Gulf meets the bay) This area has very rough surf. Several old forts along the road before you get to the main fort at the end of the island. Go on the guided tour with the ranger--very educational and the views from the top of the fort are spectacular. FYI-rangers and campground hosts are very strict on enforcing the rules, in a nice way. You will not regret camping at Pickens!
