Wonder what the Emeral Coast of Florida looked like prior to the bulldozers? Well, a quick boat shuttle to Shell Island from St. Andrews state park, or on a rented pontooon boat from a nearby marina, and you will see. Shell Island is untouched by developers, with sugar white fine sand that squeaks when you run on it. Usually, the water is pristine on the gulf side, and clear with sea grass on the bay side. The experience can vary, depending on weather and time of year. That's just the way it is on the gulf. But it's a unique, beautiful day trip. Bring a cooler, sun block, and hat. There are no restrooms. A lot of walking. Depending on the time of year (fall is best), you can find a bounty of interesting shells. Remember, stay off the dunes. Enjoy.
