After spending forever researching summer vacation destinations for my family, we selected The Breakers. My wife and I were looking for a nice, relaxing resort that was located within a short non-stop flight with plenty of onsite activities for our four young children (ages 8, 5, 3 and almost 2). Ruled out Sea Island, GA and The Sanctuary at Kiawah because July was still peak-season and their rates for two rooms were too high. It was also going to be more inconvenient to get there by plane than Palm Beach and I refuse to drive with my kids (at least until they get older) more than a few hours. Ritz-Carlton on Amelia Island was a consideration. However, what pushed our decision over the edge was that Parents.com (website for Parents and American Baby magazines) rated The Breakers the number one "Family-Friendly Resort."
When I called to check vacancies I was told that there was a substantial price break beginning July 1st. Given that we were flexible and that reasonable flights were available, I booked from July 1st through July 6th. We booked a normal-sized room (Premium Deluxe) without an ocean view connected to the smallest room they had. However, when I called later to reserve a cabana by the pool and sign the kids up for activities, I was told that they upgraded my small room, so I had two Premium Deluxes. They also offered to put a crib for the infant in the kids' room and to baby-proof the room.
After a two-hour flight into Palm Beach and ten-minute drive to the resort, we arrived early in the day. They accommodated our early arrival by getting us into the kids' room, while they finished cleaning the "adults" room. Rather than our rooms being adjoining with an access door in between, we were given two adjoining rooms with doors that opened up to their own private little hallway. I was initially unsure about this, but found that it worked perfectly for us. The two rooms had a little more privacy from one another (as well as from the other rooms in the hotel), we had the little hallway to park our stroller, and the kids would have had to get through two secured doors (their main door and the door to the little hallway) in order to get out.
The rooms themselves were much nicer, spacious and comfortable than even I expected. Like the rest of the hotel, I found our rooms to be in amazing condition given the age of the resort. I was expecting the sorts of "issues" you get with an older resort (e.g., ill-sized rooms and bathrooms, creaky floors, cracks in the walls, ill-fitting crown molding, poor water pressure/temperature, older windows). I was happily surprised to find all of these "issues" missing from The Breakers.
Service was borderline perfect throughout our stay. They just did everything right. For example, when my wife and I got into our room, we found a bottle of champagne with a card for another guest. I called the front desk to tell them of the mix-up. They apologized, gave us the bottle of champagne, and simply asked us to place the card outside the hallway door. When I canceled our cabana rental outside the 24-hour cancellation deadline b/c we found the cabanas to be too far away from the pool where we would be swimming with the kids, they agreed to waive the penalty and to contact us if one of the bungalows next to the "Active Pool" became available.
I was really impressed with the number and quality of staff. It was very apparent that they weren't hiring the bare minimum for a resort this size or hiring cheap, inexperienced employees. They had plenty of staff who were all friendly, sincere, helpful and appeared to be very intelligent and experienced.
As far as activities, there were plenty of them and all were fun and acceptably priced. We swam and played on the beach every day. My oldest son and I went snorkeling along a sunken pier right off the beach and saw tons of great fish. My older kids and I played laser tag one evening. There was a carnival and buffet on 4th of July followed by viewing the city's fireworks display from the golf course. Played nine holes of golf with my oldest son on the relatively short and fun to play ocean course - complete with a celebratory beer (for me) and chocolate ice cream (for him) at the restaurant above the pro shop. The oldest two kids had fun at the "family night out" where my daugher got her face painted and hair braided, my son built an Estes model rocket which they launched on the beach, and both enjoyed Sno-Kones and cake. Finally, the whole family spent a lot of time eating in the family-friendly Italian restaurant and playing in the adjoining "Family Entertainment Center" that housed areas dedicated to an arcade, mini-theater, live fish, crabs and turtles, arts and crafts, stuffed animals and building blocks, and outside basketball court and playground.
The only thing I wasn't quite expecting was how expensive it would be for two adults and four kids to eat and drink here. I had spent plenty of time reading reviews here to know about the $20 hamburgers, but I guess I was in denial about how it would all add up. While there was some "sticker shock" when I picked up a couple of these checks, the food and drinks were all good. And when I considered what the entire trip cost (rather than getting hung up thinking about the cost per fountain drink, hamburger, and (my favorite) frozen lemonade with vodka) in relation to the overall experience, I felt it was definitely worth it. Between the condition of the resort and quality and number of employees, it must be unbelievably expensive to run a resort like this. It makes sense why you are paying a premium for the incidentals during the stay.
To wrap up, my family and I had an experience that we will long remember. Prior to this trip, when I thought of The Breakers I thought of luxurious and formal - two things that don't usually go with kids. However, after our stay, I understand completely why Parents.com rated this as a top family-friendly resort. It had the whole package. And while the overall price for a stay at a resort like this will keep me from making this an annual trip, we will definitely be back and we hope sooner rather than later.
